JOHN STOSSEL: The Government Steals, Then Calls It 'Taxes'

Progressives want to raise taxes on individuals who make more than $200,000 a year because they say it's wrong for the rich to be "given" more money. Sunday's New York Times carries a cartoon showing Uncle Sam handing money to a fat cat. They just don't get it.

As I've said before, a tax cut is not a handout. It simply means government steals less. What progressives want to do is take money from some -- by force -- and spend it on others. It sounds less noble when plainly stated.

That's the moral side of the matter. There's a practical side, too. Taxes discourage wealth creation. That hurts everyone, the lower end of the income scale most of all. An economy that, through freedom, encourages the production of wealth raises the living standards of lower-income people as well as everyone else.

A free society is not a zero-sum game in which every gain is offset by someone's loss. As long as government keeps its thumb off the scales, the "makers" who get rich do so by making others better off. (When the government allocates capital or creates barriers to competition, all bets are off.)

Of course, this is not the prevailing view among the intelligentsia. Columbia University Professor Marc Lamont Hill tells me, "Those who have more should pay more."

This has always been true, then the thieving politicians want raise taxes to fund more of their projects that make themselves wealthy and many ignorant liberals fall for their policies.

The top 20% pay 80% of all federal income taxes. The bottom 47% pay 0% of all federal income taxes. Yet, the narrative is that the rich get away with no paying their fair share...

How can a COLUMBIA professor be THAT stupid about economics?

Had me until this statement. I agree with the overall premise, but any business's primary function is to MAKE MONEY regardless of the affect on people (unless it will make them more money)

The flat tax is the only fair way to tax. Where is Ross Perot when you need him.

Which one of the three candidates would you want your daughter to marry?
Ross Perot

The less money you make and the more kids you have the more you get back. Steal from the rich and give to the poor. We are being robbed and all the thieves have to do is wait for the refund.

When will these idiots who go around screaming that we aren't paying enough taxes open up their wallets and be the first to contribute more!

The only thing consistent in the House of Rep/House of Senate, politicans and lobbyist throughout the history of the United States government is; they will make sure the rich get richer. They will ensure the middle class and the poor are just one step from becoming slaves to them. They don't care about America. They don't care about hard working citizen. And, they certainly don't care about the unemployed. Check out big businesses outsourcing so many American made jobs. They lie, steal and cheat the tax paying citizens out of their hard working earnings. Local, county, state and federal government officials are going to do what they want to do regardless of what the average American say or ask them to do. I will NOT vote for them. I don't care what they do. I'm sick to death of politics. To Satan with them.

"Those who have more should pay more" is true. However, the "More" goes to those Momma's who love having 1, 2, 3, 4 or more babies out of wedlock with so many different non supporting/non productive sperm donated men. The momma's with their children and drama receive more federal assistance than any group in America. I am single, over 50 and have no children. I can't get a darn thing from the government. Furthermore, I pay the highest in taxes. Therefore, "those who have more should pay more" to childrens who parents are married struggling to care for their famalies. And, to people like myself who desperately want to go back to school but can't afford it. Not single momma's with children.
