Hang Up And Drive - October 1st - New Laws For Cell Phone Users: Hands Free Devices Only

Joe,

I get so mad hearing about how Maryland passed this law. This is rediculous to think that the State of Maryland, aka: the State of over taxations, State of Mass Confussion etc.... Has any interest in your safety, health or well being. This law is about getting more revenue and that is all. You can not make laws up for STUPID people. With or with out cell phones, people will drive stupid and have accidents.

The law should have been "Distracted Driver law" What about eating and driving, shaving and driving, putting on make up and driving, reading newspapers, books and maps and driving. There are a ton of things people do and drive they shouldnt, some can they are trained and some should not even be on the roads. Those rich moms with the large SUV's that cant navigate stroller more or less a car that drive like thay own the road.

If the cops TICKET people for the other thousand violations out there more often maybe the would not need to make crap up for revenue.

If The State of Maryland or confussion were sincere about there efforts, funds from this violation would go in a special account just for victims of Stupid Drivers.

Never happen, our government is run by people that are gready and only care about their jobs and how good they look.

OK, let me be the first to say that some people will never get it. Get the book "The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven". Read first hand what happens to people when they are holding and talking on a cell while driving. Yes, doing anything else but just driving is dangerous, but studies have shown hand held cell use is more dangerous that driving while drinking.

I believe that if someone goes to court with an attorney that the cell charges will be thrown out. The police have stated that they can find numerous infractions to pull you over and ticket you for the infraction as well as the cell phone. Do I think you should be driving on the phone? No. The answer should be the law should be changed to the driver should be using the cell phone only with a hands free device. This law is stupid. The lawyers are going to have a field day with this one once again wasting the court's time. You wait and see.

The "cops" write plenty of tickets.... If the Judges would levy the fines PLUS court costs, instead of suspending fines and collecting ONLY court costs(making sure THEY get paid first), there'd be more than enough $ coming in.

i agree with the author. stupid law

Don't like the law? Then vote out the bums that voted for, and enacted the law. Nov 2...payback day!

WHAT??? A citizen calling for the police to write MORE tickets?? LOL!!! It's true--- this is a REVENUE stream. And it will NOT be the last one. The state uses the police as a way to collect MIILIONS of dollars per year because taxes just can't do the trick alone. I predict that the police will soon be using high tech methods to detect cell phone use in a car, ticket you for "appearing to use" a cell phone, and soon, "failure to keep both hands on the wheel" (to show you are NOT using a cell phone". All this in addition to the increasing use of Nazi "checkpoints" to search for OTHER possible violations (more fines, fees, and confiscations). They are already priming us for "agressive driving" campaigns. BET the fines for speeding will be increasing so as to combat all those "agressive drivers" who are putting so many people at such a DANGEROUS risk, which will be the Orwellian tack the State and their armed minions will be taking. Speed cameras mounted on signs and poles are another almost irresistable (ok- TOTALLY irresitable) huge source of revenue and THEY are SURELY coming. And I'm not that smart... they're are MUCH smarter people who are doing nothing but thinking up new ways to fine, tax, levy, fee, and confiscate/sell assets of the very people they are SUPPOSED to REPRESENT. PUBLIC MASTERS at work --- NOT public servants.

You guys are hysterical! First, what is confussion and gread? Never heard of either of them. Was there something in this post about "stupid?" And 11:32, why not just put the phone down while you are driving and stay close to the speed limit? The day your child is injured or worse by some idiot driving too fast, too distracted, or too aGGressively, will be the day you come hollering for this law. Enough with the conspiracy theories already; it makes you look ignorant.

The reason this has become an issue is this.
People are ADDICTED to their cell phones! I have friends and family members who CONSTANTLY are texting with their phones and if their phone rings or a text comes in while we're talking or eating, forget it - the phone takes presidence over EVERYHING ELSE! I don't have texting or internet or any other "extra" features on my cell phone. There are only about 10 people who even have my cell phone # and that's because I don't want my cell phone ringing all the time.
Since when do we NEED to be so instantly accessible? We don't! THAT's the problem - a lot of people think they do!
Personally, I would rather see a disabler installed on ALL cars that once the car is put in gear your phone will not work - period.
Like the headline says - HANG UP AND DRIVE!

Thats awesome so when you crash or beakdown, you are car jacked. on and on cell phone does not work... You see that is the lack of common sense people like you try to make STUPID LAWS!

You can not make laws on Stupidity, but you can make the punishment severe.

I was behind a cop the other day and he was all over the yellow line, what was distracting him ? Maybe a cell phone? Who's writing their tickets?

11:40....th argument about "if YOUR child was killed/injured by somone on a cell....." is total crap. Everytime someone does something that hurts someone else I'm supposed to support a LAW prohibiting it?? And I do take offense at the upcoming "campaign" against "agressive driving" (formerly known as a speeding driver). Does ANYONE but you think the politicians won't be coming up with ever-increasing ways and means to raise revenue? Have you looked at the budgets of counties and cities and the state lately? Ignorance? THAT would be the state of mind of someone who thinks everything is rosy and the police DON'T raise millions of dollars to help the state balance the budget... Traffic fines, fees, levies, and asset confiscations are absolutely HUGE sources of revenue...of that, there is no question and no "conspiracy theory", just FACT. On another note, are the police also exempt from this law? Because I see cops on the phone ALL the time. Usually while they are speeding.

1:24 I think it is a great idea for the police to raise lots and lots of money from the people who are actually breaking the law. There is a solution that is so simple I can't believe someone with your insight hasn't thought of - if you don't want to pay, then don't break the law. Amazing idea, don't you think?

Early this afternoon I was turning left onto Dividing Creek Rd. from 13s/b at the traffic light before the Pocomoke Bridge. The light was green as I was approached and in the slow lane of traffic there was a small compact car headed s/b completely stopped. As I turned left this person was still not moving and I looked over at the car there was a young girl talking on her cell phone. She finally woke up startwed moving. She was a very lucky young LADY TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT THIS TIME. Accidents are coming so parents educate you kids.

I agree, all police officers should be obeying the cell phone law also. I see numerous ones with a cell phone in their hand while driving.

2:53... I AM a law abiding, fully employed, tax paying, voting citizen. Having said THAT, your observation is hilarious. The police are NOT supposed to be a revenue enhancing entity. My complaint is with the politicians who use them as such and create laws to further that effort. The police happen to be their armed agents doing their dirty work. And I, as a free citizen, have a right to complain about THAT. Sometimes it strikes a nerve with the police and their "they can do no wrong" supporters. Like you. The politicians and police are happy to make US (the average citizen) tow the line, but believe they (as PUBLIC MASTERS) are above those laws, when, in fact, they should be held to the same standard. They, and their oh-so-perfect supporters HATE it when I point these things out. You know what I mean.

Anon 12;44/3;18. The law was written that specifically exempts law enforcementt, ems and fire fighters during the course of their duty. Just imagine with all of the governemnt owned phones in Maryland if they had to buy blue tooths for all of them.

10:26 - the law does exempt hands-free phones.

It's only for hand-held cell phones while driving because you are not only distracted, you don't have your hand on the wheel and some defensive maneuvers take two hands.

Know what the law is before you speak and misinform others.
