GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY TO ANNOUNCE RECORD COVER CROP ENROLLMENT BY MARYLAND FARMERS

Governor to Kick-off Easton “Capital for a Day” Celebration on August 19

ANNAPOLIS, MD
– Governor Martin O’Malley tomorrow will announce record cover crop program enrollment for the coming season and highlight other new science-based State conservation efforts. Cover crops are important to the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the productivity of Maryland’s farmland. Small grains, such as wheat, rye or barley, planted as cover crops in the fall, take up unused nutrients, control soil erosion, and protect water quality in the Bay and its tributaries. The event will take place on Thursday, August 19 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Hutchison Bros. Farm, in Cordova, Talbot County.
