Yesterday we provided some initial impressions of Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton’s legislative package to control the city’s slumlords. Today we are treated to a Daily Times piece that reads as much like a SAPOA white paper than objective journalism.
Ireton’s proposal has flaws. Almost any piece of proposed legislation does. Ireton needs to sit down with SAPOA to receive their input. The Daily Times needs to stop acting like the publisher of SAPOA’s monthly newsletter. Salisbury voters need to carefully examine Ireton’s proposal AND applaud the effort to finally tackle a problem that is getting worse, not better.

DT will never change
It's obvious--look who they go to for quotes! Have they bothered to contact the neighbors who live next to some of these houses? Nope. Have they contacted SU students who have been ripped off by the landlords? Nope. 5 minutes on Facebook and they would have a list of names. 5 minutes looking at the court records and they would have a list of names. But instead they interview Insley and Maloney and Cockey and Adams. Ridiculous
It's more Ireton grandstanding to take the focus off the real problems in the City. Those apartment houses are way down the list.
all good points G.A. I don't agree with talks with SAPOA at this point though-they have had everything that they could ask for under Barrie's rein of terror, have proved over several election cycles just how nasty they can be ( god knows how nasty those private meetings are)and at every turn, fight any, ANY effort to regulate landlord behavior.
The bottom line is, the three obstructionists on council will be voting down any tightening of laws- c'mon, we all know it. Louise showed us beginning with her first campaign what a liar she is. Any effort by Ireton at concensus building with her would be nothing more than keeping SAPOA informed from the inside.
Ireton's strategy to force the council members to show thier colors by a vote is, unfortunately, probably the best he can do.
SAPOA can wait in line at the podium or contact the council members like the rest of us citizens.
Why the hell should they get any special treatment?
