Recreation Budget Meeting

Thank you to everyone who attended last Wednesday’s budget presentation and how it will impact future recreation opportunities in our County. If you were not able to attend, you will see some links below that give an overview of the situation and the cost to do business going forward. I’d encourage you to attend the Recreation Commission meeting on Wednesday, November 18 (7 pm in the Flanders room) and bring any ideas you have about how we can overcome some of these challenges we are facing. We want to work together toward some reasonable solutions and every idea is on the table at this point. Your input is greatly needed and valued so please attend if you are available. Thanks again.

Here is a note from our Recreation Superintendent, Andy Wisk:

Wednesday night’s meeting was a success in giving our stakeholders an opportunity to understand what we may be facing. Wednesday night’s meeting was only the beginning. Recreation and Parks is built on a foundation of participant and volunteer involvement. We now need to talk and meet with those people and ask for their help in finding a solution to this problem. The solution is out there!

Please follow up and continue discussions with your stakeholders. As mentioned on Wednesday, the Recreation Commission is meeting again on Wednesday, November 18th at 7 p.m. in the Flanders Rooms to begin discussing solutions. Your stakeholders should be encouraged to present any idea that they have at that meeting. Encourage them to be a part of the process. There are only good ideas!

Whether people attended the last meeting or not, there is more information available. The Daily Times wrote an article about the meeting today. Click here to read it: http://www.delmarvanow.com/article/20091106/NEWS01/911060302/1002/Wicomico-budget-threatens-park--recreation-programs

Additionally, the white paper analysis of our divisions have been placed on our website at: http://www.wicomicorecandparks.org/whitepapers.htm

Please encourage your stakeholders, whether they attended Wednesday’s meeting or not, to view these resources and stay involved. Feel free to forward this email to your key contacts. Let them know that they can make a difference! They, the actively involved citizens, are what makes Wicomico County a great place to live!

Please contact me with questions.

We deserve this kind of transparency from every county department.

What the hell is a stakeholder? Does he mean the taxpayers that he is trying to scare?

a stakeholder is someone who has a vested interest in what is occurring. It may be someone whose child is in a rec program. It maybe someone at the westside ocmmunity center etc etc.

Wisk isn't trying to scare anyone. He is simply trying to manage through a fiscal turd that the county executive handed him.

At least he is trying to open a dilaogue....seen Rick out there opening his books?....Shea??? any other county agency?

The County Executive handed him a fiscal turd? Do you llive in a cave? The State cut funding. Local taxpayers don't want to pay for programs. And so, there's not enough money to continue to deliver the programs and there's going to be less next year.
Cut the programs or raise taxes. Those are the choices.

6:31....no I do not live in a cave...but you must.We close to Westside community center but make no cuts to Finance?....we MUST keep the ferry open ????

It's very clear that the cuts are going to be placed on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens while the folks downtown make no sacrifices at all.

Futher , the state did not increase county spending from 2006 to 2007 to the tune of $17 million....the state did not cause the county to maintain that heretofore unseen level of spending.

Quit pointing fingers elswhere and take some accountability.

Wise up
