Yeah, some Blog Owners would just die to have resources like Salisbury News does. Nevertheless, it's obvious I'm not the only one who thinks it's whacked to see the SFD all the way in Cambridge. This person forgot to mention the HAZMAT equipment and the Ambulance but that's cool, we clearly get the idea. Thanks for sharing these Kodak Moments with us. We'll be sure to check up on the SFD and see what their new MADE UP PROTOCOL is today.
I'm sure they'll be flipping a coin and making excuses as to why they need to take out the Ladder Truck later for routine training, hence the traditional pit stop at WaWa, Panara Bread and then Thirsty's.

CAMBRIDGE - A 56-year-old man was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore after a hazardous materials spill Wednesday morning at a small chemical company in Cambridge.
Jeff Hurley, chief of the Cambridge fire and rescue company, said between 10 and 20 gallons of sodium hydroxide spilled during a transfer from a truck at Intercoastal Trading Inc.
Hurley said the spill was quickly contained and was never a threat to the public. The vendor had much of the spill under control by the time emergency crews arrived, according to Hurley.

Cambridge Fire Chief: I know, let's get our boys from Salisbury to come out and say hello. Better yet, let's also get their HAZMAT Team/equipment, 3 Fire Trucks, 1 Ambulance and the Fire Chief out here as well. Things have been quiet there and they could use the road trip.

They called on Salisbury for help and they went and helped.I don't understand the big deal.Its like friends helping friends or asking the next door people for help.

Sodium Hydroxide is a highly alkaline chemical, to neutralize the alkalinity it requires a highly acidic material. Such as VINEGAR or LEMON JUICE. Nothing special.
Sodium hydroxide is used in many applications, there is food grade NaOH used for making pretzels shiny. Also used to make soap, hair care products, such as perm solutions. Sodium hydroxide is also used to make biodiesel and drain cleaner.
Not a huge haz mat threat, it just gets very hot, very fast when pearlized NaOH is combined with water.
Standard operations for HAZMAT no matter how big or small. NFPA suggests and OSHA (and MOSHA for that matter) require minimum staffing for ALL HAZMAT incidents, regardless of size. These include Command, Safety, Entry, Decon, research, Liason officer, Hazmat Branch officer. Do you know who would pay the hefty fines levied if something went wrong? The taxpayers. Don't think it doesn't happen, I've seen it before.

I'm quite sure Cambridge has a fire truck and an ambulance as well as their own fire chief therfore they did not need Salisbury's additional equipment. I don't know if they have a hazmat team or not, if not, that part from SFD is justifiable, the rest is pure showboating AND a huge waste of taxpayer dollars and equipment.
all of this will be no issue when we know clearly and definintively what the written and documented policy is concerning Salisburys commitment to other communities. Right?
why is everything such an issue when it comes to the sfd, if you don't know about fire dept SOP's dispatch procedures and mutual aid qualifications, don't be so quick to judge

We are in very tough times and I'll be damned if you're going to race off to Cambridge with several vehicles for a call that was contained before Cambridge even arrived. It's total BS and I for one will not stand for it. It makes every good man there look like a complete Idiot.

Joe, that was not a free service to the CFD. Salisbury will bill back the time and equipment used. I don't know how that gets reported back to the city budget. I know because I have paid for the SFD HAZMAT service before. Or should I say my insurance did. Nothing is free even if you pay taxes. Oh by the way 6:11 its not OSHA when dealing with HAZMAT for a fire dept its NFPA. Learn your stuff before you step out and comment.
NFPA is only a guideline not law!
OSHA is one group that is delt with!

NFPA provides laws and guidelines. Even OSHA issues citations for not following NFPA.
OSHA can only step in on the paid fire departments. They cannot touch the others.

Why don't you contact the Rescue Fire Department in Cambridge and ask them why they requested assistance from the Salisbury Fire Department? Their phone number is 410-228-1670. Ask for Mike Collins. He is a member of the Cambridge Haz-Mat team and trains haz-mat responders for the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute. He is also a career member of the Montgomery County Fire Department Haz-Mat team.
I think that when you do this, you will find that Mike will be more than happy to educate you in the area of haz-mat response.
If Mike is not available, contact the MFRI training center in Princess Anne. Their number is 410-749-0313. I am sure that someone there will be more than happy to help you.
After you receive your education on this matter, I think that a printed apology on your site would be in order. A post like this is not only offensive to the Salisbury Fire Department, but to the Rescue Fire Department in Cambridge as well. They would not have called for help or backup if they felt that it wasn't needed.

I know about what goes on at the SFD. I know that they have a lot of problems that start at the top and that they need to be fixed. But it seems that our "wonder boy" of a mayor refuses to make the changes that are badly needed in order to fix the problem.
My comment was in reference to the haz-mat incident ONLY. It is quite obvious that Joe needs some education in this area, and I gave him the resources to get it.
