Grandmother Arrested For Buying Cold Medicine Twice In One Week

Last March, Sally Harpold bought a box of Zyrtec-D cold medicine for her husband, then a few days later bought a box of Mucinex-D cold medicine for her grown daughter. That put her over the limit for how much pseudoephedrine-laced cold meds you can buy in a week in her small Indiana town, so she was arrested along with 16 other potential meth makers earlier this month.

What they cannot buy their own medicine? Something is not sounding right here.

This is law is a MAJOR inconvenience to us non-lawbreakers. I take Claritan-D. I cannot purchase more than 15 pills of the 24 hr variety at a time. I have to go to the pharmacy every 15 days - I cannot go on the 14th day or I will be refused (the stores with computers record the purchase dates). The pharmacist told me to get a prescription from my DR. I did. They couldn't sell me the 15 day 24 hr variety because he didn't specify 24 hr/15 count. Back to the DR to rewrite the prescription. UNBELIEVEABLE!

Heres the skinny- most older OTC cold medications on the market contain Norephedrene (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Norephedrine),which is a very effective decongestant, but is also one of the raw ingredients used for manufacture of methamphetamine(meth).Newer formulas do not contain this ingredient but they are simply not as effective for severe congestion.
As a direct result of the meth crisis in our country, all of cold/flu meds containing Norephedrine are kept behind the paharmacists counter and you must show photo ID to purchase these OTC drugs, and sign a logbook, giving your name and address.I had to do this recently myself when purchasing Advil Cold & Sinus tablets at the local drugstore.
I do think it is outrageous that a senior citizen was arrested for buying 2 packages in a week.During the cold/flu season, that is not unusual for more households with than one adult.
