Obama To Make Personal Pitch For Olympics

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Barack Obama will travel this week to Copenhagen, Denmark, to make a big push for the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Chicago, the White House said Monday.

Obama will join First Lady Michelle Obama and other administration officials in pitching Chicago to the International Olympic Committee on October 2, spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

No other U.S. president has ever attended an IOC meeting.

Chicago is vying for the Summer Games against Madrid, Spain; Tokyo, Japan; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Leaders from Brazil, Spain and Japan are expected to also make an in-person pitch.

The United States has hosted four Summer Olympic Games. In 1904, the Games were held in St. Louis, Missouri; in Los Angeles, California, in 1932 and 1984; and most recently Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996.

The International Olympic Committee will vote on the host city next month in Copenhagen.

In April, the U.S. Olympic Committee chose Chicago over Los Angeles as the U.S. bid city. Earlier, three other U.S. cities were in the running: Houston, Texas; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and San Francisco, California.

The last U.S. city to host an Olympics was Salt Lake City, Utah, which was the venue for the 2002 Winter Games.

Obama held an event at the White House earlier this month to rally for Chicago as the host city.

"I may live in Washington these days, but I've called Chicago home for nearly 25 years," Obama said.

"It's a city of broad shoulders, big hearts, and bold dreams. A city of legendary sports figures, legendary sports venues and legendary sports fans.

"We want these Games!" Obama exclaimed, drawing applause.

While in Denmark, the president and first lady will meet with Queen Margrethe II and her husband, Prince Henrik, the White House said in a release. Obama also is scheduled meet with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Obama will leave Thursday night and return Friday afternoon, the White House said.

Between all the TV shows, vacations, partying, and now this trip, when is Barak going to fix our problems? Seems like his priority's are way out of whack. I guess it will be a couple days less to screw up the American way of life.

i agree with anon 08:22.
is obama trying to live the life of a president or a rock star?
how much money is this trip going to cost the american tax payer?

That's exactly what it looks like. With all the $$ going to Chicago why not the Olympic Games, too. Obama is acting like he's got a movie coming out soon, doing the "talk show circuit". Yea, waste more of our money!!

Great city to hold it in.... only click on the video in the story if you have a strong stomach..
I'm sure this side of the city will be hidden from the World.
When it was held in Tenn. it was held in a quiet place on the Chattahochee river. They made changes to the river to cause heavier rapids for the kayakers.
On the other side of the coin, it does dump a lot of money for a short time into economy. I just believe there are better cities to put it in instead of Chi-town.
Something tells me, if the Pres wants it, he'll get it

But Valerie Jarrett and Richard Daley will make millions on the deal, so whats the problem?

With all the travelling he is doing he will soon need a new jet. Maybe if we are lucky he will invite Biden,Pelosi, Hillary, and Harry Reid for a ride on the plane and the thing will crash.

Now that would be change we all could believe in.

Another comment from the whiny ass left. Grow a set.

But I guess it was different when your leftist friends from Hollywood made movies about Bush being assinated. That was O,K. wasn't it. You liberals can dish it ou, but you sure can't take it.

And to equate anon 1:36 post to that of the post about the little girl shows just hoe ridiculous your argument is.

As I said earlier grow a set.

Nope thats not the case. I do not know why I am always labeled a liberal which I am not. I have no leftwing friends in Hollywod. My comment said it is terrible to wish death on anyone which would include Good President Bush. If it's a liberal stance to not want to see people killed then I am guilty I guess. Wishing death on people you do not agree with however, makes you an idiot however, I am afraid.

ps I have a pair and a brain to go with them. You should really try it some time.

Hey, wait a minute. President Hope and Change has been lecturing all of us peons about global warming and how life on this planet is doomed if we don't eliminate green house gases. And then he flies off to Copenhagen to beg and plead for the Olympics in Chicago. Wonder what his carbon footprint for this trip is? What a hypocrite.
