The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) has reportedly massacred hundreds of men and boys in Mosul were used as human shields against approaching Iraqi-led forces.
The jihadist group rounded up and shot 284 males before dumping their corpses in a mass grave at a former agriculture college in northern Mosul, according to CNN.
They were reportedly lined up and shot on the grounds of a campus where young Iraqis were once taught how to grow food in their country’s punishing climate and then buried by bulldozer.

Maybe I'm just naïve, but to prevent this type of situation, wasn't this exactly the reason that the United Nations was initially formed?

The Myth:
Religious minorities have flourished under Islam. Muslims are commanded to protect Jews and Christians (the People of the Book) and do no harm to them. In Sura 109, the Quran says, "To you, your religion. To me, mine."
The Truth:
Religious minorities have not “flourished” under Islam. In fact, they always dwindle to mere shadows after a few centuries of persecution and discrimination. Some were converted from their native religion by brute force, others under the agonizing strain of dhimmitude.
What Muslims call “tolerance,” others correctly identify as institutionalized discrimination. The consignment of Jews and Christians to dhimmis under Islamic rule means that they are not allowed the same religious rights and freedoms as Muslims. They cannot share their faith, for example, or build houses of worship without permission.
Those who do not believe in the word of Mohammad are irrelevant, deserving of death.
The U.N. is so sluggish and ineffective in these interventions that it's almost best not to send them until the real fighting is over.
