‘An Amazing Moment’ For Decatur Grad Who Now Works As Trump Campaign Staffer

Kevin Chmielewski: “I was one of those knucklehead kids growing up who got straight C’s and D’s. I was on welfare, I never went to college and I should have been one of those kids that ends up in jail or doing dishes somewhere. I attribute my success to the people in our school system and our community who raised me. They say it takes a neighborhood or a community to raise a child, well this community raised me.”

BERLIN — One of the most memorable moments of Donald Trump’s visit to Stephen Decatur High School on Wednesday night had nothing to do with politics. It had to do with the GOP frontrunner giving a local man who works for his campaign a bow in front of his hometown crowd.

“Where the hell is Kevin?,” exclaimed Trump in the middle of his 45-minute speech in the SDHS gym. “Get him out here.”
As 1998 SDHS graduate and Trump Senior Advance staffer Kevin Chmielewski reluctantly walked on stage in front of about 2,000 screaming fans in the gymnasium at the beckoning call of his boss, it was simultaneously one of the greatest moments of his life, and a moment that will likely make him the brunt of many jokes with his cohorts.

How does one reconcile:

“I was one of those knucklehead kids growing up who got straight C’s and D’s."

with

"I attribute my success to the people in our school system"

Obviously, Kevin, the people in your school system failed you - you got straight C's and D's.

@1:29 thank you! I was hoping I wouldn't be the only one perplexed by that association haha

I am perplexed that someone who "ends up" washing dishes would be doing a less than noble thing. It's better than being on welfare! And why he would put it on the same level as being in jail is beyond me. I am not impressed by him at all. Trump, yes. But not him.

I think you both are just jealous...

It's not obvious the school system failed him. Maybe his teachers showed kindness and patience with a difficult student? You don't know what went on behind the scenes with this situation.

Well 1:29 PM, maybe without the school system he would of just been failing altogether, so with the school system help he at least got C's and D's. Anyway it's over and he's doing great so give it a break.

1:29 Obviously the school system did NOT fail him. He may not have had academic success but he certainly learned something to achieve the success to be where he is today. He obviously learned forward thinking skills and plain old thinking skills, something lost on almost all public school students. He also was able to achieve emotional intelligence which in the world of big business which equates to a high salary is just as if not more important than "book smarts."

Amazingly the readers of The Dispatcher signed their name and had great things to say about Kevin and his story.
As usual all the readers of SBYNews are named Anonymous and some chose to trash - trash Kevin, and the school system.
IMO Kevin believes the caring educators of the school system put him on the right track.

Glad you felt you could share your story with the Dispatch and the public Kevin. You have done well with yourself.

Typical Salisbury hating on a local kid who served his country and got some breaks. Yet you backstabbing freaking hateful, jealous bums who will do nothing but cry about good people! ! EMBARRASSING HILLBILLIES! !!!

Ha. No individual responsibility whatsoever. I suppose criminals and the poor should blame society because their social position is no fault of their own.

Some people do horrible in school but do great things when they get out of school. Each person is different. There are some people that get straight A but can't function in the real world.

Say what you want but if it wasn't for this young many Trump might have chose another place. We have already learned that the Civic Center was being used that night and so was the Convention Center in OC. That doesn't leave many other places.
