Food Lion / Giant Merger Intel.

Merger of grocery chains a done deal, will be completed by mid-2016

NEW YORK —
The owner of Stop & Shop, Martin's and Giant will tie up with the parent company of Food Lion, creating a $29 billion grocer that will be in a stronger position to compete with Wal-Mart and other discount retailers.

The deal, which would create the fourth largest grocer in the U.S., is the last in a series of buyouts and mergers that has major players bulking up to carve out market share in an industry that has grown intensely competitive.

Shoppers might be the biggest winners as the bargaining power of grocers grows along with their size, said Euromonitor retail analyst Tim Barrett.

The latest merger is between the Dutch retailer Royal Ahold NV and its rival, Belgium's Delhaize Group. The combined company, to be called Ahold Delhaize, will generate about 61 percent of its revenue in the U.S.

In addition to Stop & Shop and Giant, Royal Ahold owns the Martin's supermarket chain and online grocer Peapod in the U.S. In Europe, it owns Albert Heijn stores. Food Lion and Hannaford are Delhaize's best-known brands in the U.S. It operates the Delhaize and Tempo chains overseas.

There are three Martin’s stores in Hagerstown, three in Franklin County, Pa., and several in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and Frederick, Md.

There are more than a dozen Food Lion stores in Washington County, Md., Franklin County, Pa., and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

Together, Ahold Delhaize will have more than 6,500 stores around the world and cater to 50 million customers a week in the U.S. and Europe.

Overheard at a Democrat Club meeting. Obama's administration has led the previous administration in allowing consolidation. Its done great things for the banks and our economy. Obviously allowing grocery stores to consolidate to keep them in business will be good as well. Right Democrats. When businesses get bigger the consumer wins!! Right Democrats?

I hate food Lion. Their selection is horrible and their prices aren't that great for the quality.

I understand Acme has put a bid in for the Giant Store!

That doesn't leave many choices. Don't we have trust laws that address such things?

I read that they are putting another foreign owned grocery store at the north end of town. How about giving us a good one at the south end?

The same loaf of bread baked by our local Schmidt Bakery today was 2.28 at Wal Mart, and 3.59 at Giant. that's $1.31 for one item! Multiply by the 30 items in your basket, and you just overspent by $39.30!!!!!!!

Yes, their meat does not have the 12% solution in it, but there's Hastings for that.

Say what you will about Giant but I watched the television expose Food Lion for washing off expired food and repackaging it and changing sell by dates on meats. I don't trust them and I will not shop there for anything that is perishable. I stopped shopping there after that news release and have NEVER gone back. I will travel to local farmers for meats or to a store in Annapolis with a cooler if I must.

How can they merge? Food Lion has rude employees in 90% of their stores,no union, crappy meats and poor selection and they have hiked their prices up.Giant is known for friendly well paid employees, fresh foods and a huge selection.
