A new 4-H club has fledged in the Berlin area and branched out to explore the world of Robotics. The Worcester County 4-H Berlin Hoot Owls Club, open to all youth ages 5 – 18, met on November 12 with more than a dozen young people trying their hand at Robotics.
Under the guidance of Worcester County 4-H Program Coordinator, Cindy Morris, teams of two strategized to follow a build manual to construct an alligator made of Legos. The teams then used laptop computers to program their alligator to move, snapping its mouth open and closed. Robotics is just one of the many activities 4-H offers in the focus area of S.T.E.M. education.
4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization dedicated to helping cultivate the next generation of leaders and tackling the nation’s top challenges such as the shortage of skilled professionals, maintaining our global competitiveness, encouraging civic involvement, and becoming a healthier society. According to a study by Tufts University, 4-H youth are three times more likely to actively contribute to their communities and have higher educational achievement. Serving more than 7,000,000 young people, 4-H offers opportunities in more than 100 project areas that are as diverse as the kids themselves. Under the supervision of trained adult volunteers, 4-H youth “Learn by Doing”.

Sounds like a fun program. I learned a lot when I was in 4H, not just about farming but also public speaking, making presentations and project planning.
