More than 8,000 tickets given out for violators of updated Move Over law

First, you were required to move over or at least tap the breaks for emergency vehicles on the side of the road. But this year, it's not just first responders you need to be on the lookout for.

Larry Green owns Green's Garage. He organized several tow jobs to give ABC2 News a firsthand look at what it's like to set up shop, on the shoulder.

But up until Oct. 1, flying by these crews as they rescue the broken down and abandoned on the side of the road wasn't illegal.

It's something that hits the Schrieber family every day.

Jenna Schrieber's husband, James, a tow truck driver, had just one tire left to hook up when a driver crashed into him, throwing him into his 50 ton wrecker on the side of Route 100.

Pardon me while I show my age here but, this used to be called road etiquette and was drilled into us by our parents, driver's ed teachers or both. And that included ANYONE pulled over on the side. Also moving to the left lane when traffic approached from an on ramp, assuming,of course, that it's safe. Now we have to pass laws for what used to be common sense. So sad!

They did not have to pass a law, they chose to. This story is written as if all of us use emergency vehicles as targets as we careen down the highway. The truth is, it is certainly an extremely small percentage. Thus, we do not have emergency vehicles being run into all the time. Once again, we will all pay for the very few and the police will get yet another fundraiser.

It is funny how you claim that "we will all pay for the very few" when it is only "the very few" will be fined for breaking the law. In other words, try being respectful on the road.

Actually this is the same logic they use for DUI roadblocks, stop light cameras and all the rest.

Yet another source of state revenue, they seem to be unending.

Actually you are correct. But road etiquette has long been gone. Even truck drivers don't move over for other truckers on the side of the road.

It takes less than a minute to move over than you can move right back over, if safe.

Then of course you have the idiots who only travel in the left lane and screw everything up.

yes and reduce obesity at the same time. people have more money in their pockets minus the cost of a bicycle or moped. People would be more fit and have less diseases and ailments. No more high speed adrenaline chases by cops. win win

The summer speed traps going eastbound to OC pull speeders over on both sides of the 2 lane road leaving no lane to change to without breaking the law.

Can you say "Bonus round!"

When I get there, I will straddle the center line, stop, and wait for instructions while those behind me are screeching and swerving to dodge me.
