Motorists Asked to Be Aware of Roadside Volunteers this Saturday

Annual statewide litter cleanup day is Oct. 18

Dover --
Motorists are asked to be alert for volunteers working along the state's roadways this Saturday, October 18, as hundreds of citizens do their part to keep Delaware beautiful. The occasion is the annual "Imagine a Litter-Free Delaware Day", hosted by the Delaware Department of Transportation's Adopt A Highway program, when volunteers make an extra effort to clean up litter statewide.

Adopt-A-Highway volunteers will be active between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Participants will be wearing brightly colored safety vests so they can be seen, but motorists should still proceed with caution. Participants will be on both main roads and rural roads, as well as in local neighborhoods and communities.

Most participants in this event are registered Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, but DelDOT encourages other residents to join the effort; especially those who have made similar commitments to keep neighborhood and community streets clean throughout the state. Adopt-A-Highway participants patrol roads for liter several other times each year on dates of their choosing.

Last year, more than 600 people participated in "Imagine Liter-Free Delaware Day", picking up more than 1,000 bags of litter, or about 5,000 cubic feet of trash.

Should inclement weather occur, participants will be out on Sunday, October 19, the designated rain date.
