Unilever Ends Ice Cream Production in Western Md.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Ice cream production has ended at a Hagerstown plant that supplied Good Humor bars and other frozen goodies for nearly 30 years.

The president of the United Steelworkers local that represents 391 plant workers said Thursday that the shutdown by British-Dutch conglomerate Unilever will affect the entire community.

Larry Lorshbaugh says he'll have to travel at least 70 miles to find another employer who could use his skills as a certified pasteurizer.

I guess the union pay scale made it impossible to get a fair return on investment. You would think the unions would wake up.

Just only one more business leaving Maryland. It didn't say they were going out of business, just going out of Maryland. Something else for O'Malley to brag about.

According to Unilever Good Humor's parent corporation they are moving production to Missouri and Tennessee where "labor costs are much cheaper."
Gee Thanks United Steel Workers and Omalley and every other politician who supports the unions and refusing to make a right to work state.
I used to dislike the democrats but I'm really starting to hate them with a passion. Let's make an effort to vote out all the local politicians who support unions.

maybe Marty will put a casino there and create 2,000 jobs.

The United Steelworkers local should have forced them to stay in Hagerstown, just like the union forced Dresser to stay in Salisbury.

Unions are bad for the economy. Originally, unions were a good thing. Now, there are so many federal laws that carry the protection that caused the formation of unions. I come from a union family and saw, first hand, how unions tied the hands of businesses.

Unions can force companies to do many things...thankfully, they can't stop them from shutting down and moving to a right to work state!
