Let's Find Waldo

I'm encouraging all of you who care about the animals at the Wicomico Humane Society to pick up the phone or physically stop in there today and ask for Mr. Fitzgerald, the new Director.

If you can't get a hold of him I want you to keep trying for the next two weeks, seriously.

What you'll find is that Mr. Fitzgerald cannot be located because he's left the Humane Society for a two week vacation in Hawaii. So now your saying, so, what's the big deal, right. Who's running the shelter? He fired ALL of the people who were qualified. Who's running the books, since he fired the accountants?

The Humane Society had the opportunity to hire a true professional. Instead, Mrs. Gordy hired her Brother In Law who has no experience. The other professional wanted $50,000.00 a year to direct the HS. Instead, it's been reported she hired her Brother In Law for $45,000.00 a year with a promise of another $5,000.00 a year the 2nd year.

I personally believe all of the members of the Humane Society need to call together a meeting and terminate the entire sitting Board. The Humane Society is completely out of control at the expense of the animals.

If you think I'm wrong, go pay a visit and see if Mr. Fitzgerald is there over the next two weeks. Ask the person in charge how much experience they have. Ask if they were a part time employee.

MANY people that have financially given up large sums of money over the years told me they are done. They are so disgusted with how things are going down there they refuse to put up any more donations.

Mrs. Gordy, it's time you step down and let some fresh faces take over. I'd also suggest term limits for new Board Members.

I'm curious how does one become a board member? I would love to be able to help the animals out...I may not have experience but i wouldn't be stupid and fire the experienced personel...and fire the accountants..who does that????

Oh I'm sure Mrs. Gordy isn't the only one in that bed. You can be sure Charlotte Littleton had just as much to do with it as well.

Fitzgerald gets rid of the accountants & takes a 2 week trip to Hawaii.

You do the math...

Joe, Mr. Fitzgerald is Ms. Gordy's nephew-in-law. His two-week vacation has not been earned since he hasn't completed a year of employment so maybe he's taking the time without pay.

How can he afford 2 weeks in Hawaii on $45K per year? I make 2xs that and can't afford to go!

is there state or federal oversight for local humane societies?

His wife works as an x-ray tech so I think they would be able to afford the vacation. I'm not defending the guy I'm just stating a fact.

He's not there.

IF it is true that he is paid more his first year with no experience or knowledge of shelter work than Ms. Lugo was paid after ten years, the board of directors should resign. IF an experienced shelter manager was told that $50,000 was too high a salary but Mr. Fitzgerald is being paid that, the board of directors should resign. It's nice they all like Bonnie and her nephew-in-law, but they should not have let that dictate who they hired. Did any one of the directors oppose his hiring or the salary he was given? If so, those people can stay on.

He is her nephew-in-law and the $5,000 raise was to be after six months, not at the start of the second year.

I don't get it...the guy isn't allowed to go on vacation? What?

He just started the job and fired everyone that knew what was going on. Now he is off on vacation. Who is left there that is responsible and knows how to properly care for all those animals.

He was told he would earn two weeks vacation at the end of his first year (in September). Since this is only July, he cannot be on a paid vacation.

Something definetly stinks at the HS and until the people of the county and city stand up and demand change and accountability nothing is going to change. The HS and board of directors needs to be examined by the IRS and an independent audit. The county and the city both pay substantial amounts of money yearly to this organization and should know how their money is spent. The animals housed there pay the ultimate price with an inexperienced staff and the funding going God knows where.

You say he cannot be on a paid vacation, but since Mr Fitzgerald is now in charge of the money, the accounting books and procedures and I would guess this includes the checkbook....who's to say whether he gets a paycheck for the next two weeks? Answer-He is!
He's the boss.
He's the accountant.
He's the payroll administrator.
He's the hire/fire guy.
He's got the checkbooks.

Sounds like a great time to be in Hawaii.

Aloha, folks!

(p.s. feel free to invade his office and go through his desk to find those books to see what he's really spending money on.... Just kidding, I'm sure he has them well hidden somewhere else)

First let me just say...I think it is pathetic that two individuals that were fired or let go because of their attitudes or behaviors, would lash out and discredit anyone left at the Humane Society. It speaks volumes to their character! Second, I have come into the HS and surrendered a couple kittens that I found in my crawl space. While there, I was treated with such disrespect from the management. I felt like a criminal turning in my own pets. Everytime my family and I have dropped off any donations in the past, it has always been received with less then an interested gratitude. We have been back to the HS in the past week, I can truly say, the staff was much more pleasant and welcoming, the facility was clean and the over all appearance was inviting.
I think that people that are as vicious as these two are being, throwing their coworkers under the bus because of their dislike of the new Director, is really showing their true colors. Get over it! You had your chance to make the HS an outstanding place for animals. Unfortunately, your personality wasn't fit for humane consumption. Truthfully, your treatment of the animals while my family has visited the shelter has been less then humane too! You both ought to be ashamed of yourselves for your behavior!
