LAVALE, Md. - It's strange enough to be kicked in the face by a deer, let alone
one with rabies.
But that's what happened to one western Maryland woman this month.
Theresa Stevens, of LaVale, tells the Cumberland Times-News that she
encountered the deer on July 6 after letting her dog out of the house.

I wonder how the deer caught rabies.. I have 3 hens and a rooster. They stay inside of a pen but I let them out when I am home to surpervise as I lost too many to red foxes when I let my previous chickens out unsupervised. Just when I thought the pen was secure and nothing could get in the pen to them, we found a young possum asleep in one of the nest boxes. He had a belly full of 3 eggs and was not wanting to get out of the nest. We ended up having to lasso a rope around his neck to pull him out. He then played possum for a few minutes and then waddled into the woods. The chickens appeared to be unscathed, still on their roost and only a few ruffled feathers.
My chickens are my pets and I frequently pick up the hens and the rooster to scratch the top of their heads which they love. Recently, when I let them out to "play" the rooster has started to get mean and chases me trying to bite my feet. Or maybe he's just horney??
Is it possible that this possum had rabies and possibly infected my rooster? The possum did not appear aggressive when we got it out of the pen, only disappointed that he had to give up his nice bed.
Just wondering.....
