Now is the time to nominate that deserving teacher for some special recognition. Nominations for 2012-2013 Wicomico Teacher of the Year may be made now through Jan. 27. Anyone in the community is invited to seek recognition for a current teacher in Wicomico County Public Schools who has taught full-time for at least five years.
Nomination forms will be sent home with students. They are also available in schools and at the Board of Education Office, and on line at www.wcboe.org (look for the "new" flag in the list of home page links).
The Wicomico County Teacher of the Year Program annually solicits nominations from parents, students, the community and fellow educators to recognize Wicomico teachers with exceptional qualities and characteristics that make them shining examples of teaching in Wicomico County. Nominations can come from a student who treasures a special teacher, a parent who sees the benefits of all that a teacher does, someone who recalls an outstanding experience in the classroom of a teacher who is still teaching, or a coworker who sees the value of a fellow teacher’s work every day.
“It is an honor to be nominated for Teacher of the Year. Nominees should demonstrate all of the characteristics associated with exemplary teachers. They should be dedicated educators and caring individuals whose primary focus is the education of our children,” said Dr. Carolyn Johnston, chairperson of the Teacher of the Year Committee.
Wicomico Teachers of the Year model teaching excellence. Past honorees include the current Teacher of the Year, Chad Pavlekovich, the Salisbury Middle School teacher who was a finalist for Maryland Teacher of the Year, and many other county winners and state finalists. Wicomico is proud to have on its staff two past Maryland Teachers of the Year: Bonnie Walston, then a resource teacher at Parkside High School and now the director of special education (1994), and Aaron Deal, then a computer education teacher at Salisbury Middle School (2004) and now a pupil personnel worker.
Semifinalists for the Wicomico award will be interviewed by a blue ribbon panel of judges (Feb. 27-29). On March 22, during the Teacher of the Year Banquet at Salisbury University’s Commons, the finalists at the primary, intermediate, middle and high school levels will be named, and the new 2012-13 Wicomico Teacher of the Year will be announced.

Isn't it enough they get a fat union pay check, lifetime pay and benefits at tax payer expense?
Teacher of the year? That should go to Mr. Joe Albero.
He has 'taught' how many thousands of people about how things really are around here, and elsewhere?
And best part is, he isn't union.
And to all those that allowed the sbynews blog to define their opinion, 5:37 and 6:02 are a perfect example of how its readers really feel about educators... Sad! The education profession is about inspiring youth, not being unionized and collecting "fat" checks. To the teachers and administrators in Wicomico County who go to work each day and make kids FIRST; THANK YOU! I do not have the patience for your job. I personally am saddened by the lack of respect that you receive in Wicomico County... a lack of respect which is often emphasized in blogs found on this blog site... whether that is the intent of this site's editors or not. Does anyone else feel that this site has done more to encourage discontent in the community than hope?

Do you send in similar comments to the Daily Times Grapevine? Of course not, they side 100% with teachers.
Like Police Officers and Firefighters, they get paid to do a job, JUST LIKE TEACHERS, yet they don't come on Blogs asking for praise, like you. Teachers are paid to do a job and you better damn site do it right and do it well.
Funny how you seem to forget the large volume of teachers that have sexually ABUSED children on the job too.
Mind you, I'm not at all suggesting most teachers behave like that but if it's bad in Church's, are schools and teachers exempt?
Some, (I believe) choose that profession because they don't want to be Priests or Nuns, yet they are driven towards children.
Now, that being said, there are some unbelievable and great teachers out there and guess what, they couldn't care less about being told they're great. They do it because they were BORN to teach and each and every one of you reading this comment will agree that at least once in your life you have been blessed to be in one of their classes.
So, if you want to pick on the comments here and blame the ones YOU don't like on the Editor, so be it. However, maybe one day you'll come to learn from a teacher that this is America and every one has the right to their freedom of speech, unless your a liberal teacher who doesn't agree with that comment, I forgot.

Who the &*%$ are you? You think this is the only site that disparages teachers? Look at the recent debacle in Wisconsin for instance.
Teachers are getting dumped on because they DESERVE to get dumped on. And your lack of education would suggest you were in the public schools in Wicomico county.
What's really SAD is you don't even know how uninformed you are and think everything is fine.
And to suggest others can't have an opposing opinion to yours unless it is sowed by an editor of a blog?
You can disagree all you like but to be insulting and offensive is not only unacceptable, it is just plain ignorant on your part.
You should be the last one to discuss education. You don't have any to speak of.

Jim Ireton for Teacher of the Year. Nah, never mind that thought. He wasn't well liked at any of his schools and he is only there part time. He should actually resign.
