NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Carrier IQ is a piece of software installed on millions of mobile phones that logs everything their users do, from what websites they browse to what their text messages say.
No, it's not part of some great Orwellian plot; it's a diagnostic tool that carriers say plays a crucial role in helping them assess and troubleshoot their networks. But the recording app, which flew under the radar for years until security researchers drew attention to it recently, is setting off red-alert privacy and security alarms.

Well logging key strokes has nothing to do with transmitting or not transmitting data...
Your storing it for someone to take so they can look at it...
Read the language carefully... They don't record yet they log keystrokes... (That's recording folks)
Also to state, in the article they go as far to say they don't transmit data, yet HOW in the hell do you use it or look at it if it is not transmitted? seems to me they log into your phone via backdoor to get it then if they don't transmit it... on the same note, what's the point of the software if all the manufactures and carriers say they don't transmit it? how do they get it to use it to check network crap?
ON another note, there is software that is already being used by police, F.B.I., and anyone who pays the 200 bucks or whatever it costs, to activate your mic and hear everything around your phone. Even when it is turned off.
They also can read all text messages, incoming and outgoing calls, listen to the calls in real time, and more things if they actually have your phone in their hands for about 10 minutes.
You have to remove the battery to have privacy.
And on some phones, there is a watch-type battery inside your phone with wires sticking out of it. You would be advised to remove that one.
Of course, some might say if you're not doing anything wrong, yada yada yada.
I don't want people to know my business no matter what it is. But that's just me.
