I thought these guys were going to be off clock cops that Walmart was going to pay for all there expenses? not true?

The city is responsible for public safety. So yes.

anon: 11:18, that is Bull Crap. Let WalMart pay for the security of their shoppers. They make more than enough in profits to be able to afford security officers. WalMart may have lower prices on some things but it all comes at a price. They treat their employeess like crap.

They are paying for it just like, the Airport, The schools, The Centre at Salisbury and every other business that hires cops to do their security, so there is no issue.

Not on corporate or company property as a free service. Walmart like any other business in this city should be footing the bill for private security, not the city taxpayers. More corporate greed that has many in this country up in arms. Where is this in the city budget?

Taxpayers should not be responsible for corporate security. Walmart can afford to hire and pay lots of security people and they need to do so.

If there is a problem, the police would end up having to respond anyway, wouldn't they?
It's true that the Walmarts require a good bit of babysitting because of the shoplifting, etc, but they are aware of that and try to offset it some by making a lot of donations in the community (at least Fruitland does).
With that said, it doesn't seem unreasonable for them to request a helping hand on one particular day that's turning into a scheduled stampede in many places.
I think the potentially troublesome people will be a bit less inclined to start something with uniformed (and armed) LE right there.

As long as WalMart get the bill for every minute of over-time put in whether it's SPD or Sheriff's office. It should not cost the taxpayers a single dime. Knowing WalMart the bill(s) will get lost in AR. anyway.

no, they are responsible for capturing criminals. they can only RESPOND to unsafe activity. ultimately, we are responsible for ourselves.

If only we had the right to protect ourselves...

", it doesn't seem unreasonable for them to request a helping hand on one particular day that's turning into a scheduled stampede in many places."

Walmart makes billions of profit off of that super holiday savings, buying day; they can afford to pay the extra security for their profit, not the taxpayers, they're already pocketing our money because we're the ones funding it.

Maybe "Occupy Wallstreet" will spend the day at Walmart walking around pretending to be looking like they are looking over their shoulder all day to see if someone is watching them.

Fill all your carts and leave them in the auto department and let the meats and groceries get to a dangerous temperature and they'll have to throw all the food out because of their greedy corporate collective butts.

You know, I don't blame Walmart to want some long term city officers to do some security, they may pick up on someone with priors walking in the door, that would be a big advantage and get the word out.

However, I don't think it should be on the city clock. Walmart would have to provide to pay them like any second job and any liability that may fall, falls on them.

Is not this why we have priate security companies? If an officer accidently injures someone then the town could be sued

Joe, Walmart pays the cops.

The problem is you gotta have agreements nowadays or the taxpayers get the liabilities.

The council is absolutely right in this. Ireton is a teacher, not a businessman or attorney. Times have changed.

Also, why the heck was this so last-minute? Didn't Walmart know they'd be holding a Black Friday sale?

I smell a rat.

If a flash mob went in Wal Mart on black Friday, would anyone notice?

That could be any day at any Walmart.
