Texas Prisons Cut Lunch To Save Money

Texas prisons are scaling back meals on weekends to cut costs – a move that could leave inmate blood sugar levels low and tempers high.
Thirty-six prisons are cutting lunches on Saturdays and Sundays, forcing some 23,000 inmates to cram three-meals-worth of calories into an early breakfast and dinner, the New York Times reported. The cutbacks are part of a broader effort to save $2.8 million in food-related expenses, but some nutritionists are crying foul.

Seems a bit extreme. There must be somewhere else that cuts could be made, maybe extracurricular activities?

Extracurricular activities? For prisoners? Shall we eliminate field trips to the zoo? Basket weaving classes? They are prisoners, criminals for Chrissake. They are entitled to enough food to keep them alive and that's all.

They're prisoners. They should be thankful that they're not made to live on bread and water.

turn the outside area of the prison into a garden. If they want to eat they must do what the rest of us do. WORK FOR IT.

Some college campuses eliminated Sunday breakfast and went to two meals on Sunday. I don't think the students died.

better yet, give them a "loaf" twice a day. cold in the morning and warm at night. it will give them 2700 calories and all the vitamins and minerals they need. and it tastes gross too. wcdc should do this too.

We need to treat prisoners like prisoners. They should be worked hard and fed the minimum.

Well, I have. And I wanted it to be an unpleasant enough experience that they would not want to return. It isn't supposed to be a country club, you know.
