STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY CONGRATULATING DR. ADAM RIESS FOR RECEIVING THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 4, 2011) – Governor Martin O’Malley today issued the following statement congratulating Dr. Adam Riess for receiving the Nobel Prize in physics:

“I’d like to congratulate Dr. Riess for being one of three recipients of the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics.

“For the second time in three years and the fourth in 10 years, a current member of the Johns Hopkins faculty has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Dr. Riess joins a proud tradition of scientists from Johns Hopkins who are making critical advances in their fields – to feed, fuel and heal our world.

“His contributions to astrophysics are remarkable and his continued quest for knowledge should serve as inspiration to the next generation of scientists and researchers, teaching us that you can reach for the stars and bring back a constellation. Dr. Riess is very deserving of this most prestigious honor and Marylanders should be proud to join him in celebrating this outstanding accomplishment.”
