A Sad But Common Story

Yesterday we were standing outside talking when a couple from Northern Virginia came up to us in front of my building in Downtown Salisbury and said, where's the Downtown shopping?

I pointed up the Plaza and they said, we know, we already walked through that are, is that all there is?

Unfortunately, people are somehow being driven to come to Downtown Salisbury, (being an All American City) but when they arrive, there's nothing here but empty buildings and false hope.

Now that Urban Salisbury is gone, the Mayor and City Council need to STOP talking the talk and WALK THE WALK!

Shanie Shields stated in the last Council Meeting that something has to be done about the Downtown Plaza. I almost jumped out of my seat wanting to confront the Council and say, OK, what the hell are YOU suggesting.

It seems, (to me anyway) that everyone wants to point fingers at everyone else, yet NO ONE wants to take responsibility for making it happen. That goes for the former administration as well.

Ann Taylor has her Parker Place property up for sale and quite frankly it has to be one of the best buys I've seen in the Downtown area. While there have been numerous bites and interest, no one has stepped up to the plate with vision.

I purchased 300 W. Main Street with the full intention of remodeling the building, (which I have done) and make a solid investment into an area in which I'm confident will eventually thrive. However, I, (alone) cannot turn things around. I personally know there's someone VERY interested in the old Feldman's building, someone with vision.

I personally believe if enough people come together with creative ideas we can ALL make the re-birth of Downtown Salisbury a reality. We need young ideas and old. We need to listen to what SU Students would like to see and let them be a part of this project.

There are so many beautiful buildings Downtown, many of which can be easily converted into wonderful shops and living space. Bring on the ideas Folks. Let's pull together and make Salisbury a place we can all be proud of. I look forward to your input and ideas.

The notion that there will ever again be significant retail stores downtown is a pipe dream -- and the notion that Salisbury is an "All American City" is absurd.

They should have cut funding for Urban Salisbury (money down a hole) years ago.

not a place to do GOOD business. what is the old term, "location, location, location". people are NOT going to go out of their way to buy a product of same or greater value. just that simple.

most cities turn their downtown waterfront property into areas with cafes, art studios and the like to attract locals to come and hang out. of course their waterfronts don't look like the open sewer here in salisbury.
plus the smell from perdue in the summer time would send anybody running from the area! so until there is a wholesale change around that area, nothing else will change!

You should have jumped out of your chair and asked Shanie Shields what she's done for downtown, other than sell or try to sell government property for pennies on the dollar.

I have been to Third Friday and I have never seen Shanie Shields there. I have seen Terry Cohen with her family there actually spending money!

I'm tired of people blaming Urban Salisbury for not "doing enough". US received very little funding to do any actual work and never had the support from city leaders to implement any plan US proposed.

What do you expect?

Joe, where is your business downtown. All I see is a vacant building at 300 W. Main St. What say you or will you not post this?

Pete Cooper had the right idea with the pedestrian plaza, which Barrie Tilghman terminated by letting it be used as a road for vehicles.

Very few "downtown" areas can survive since the dawn of strip malls, large malls and discount stores. Not many people want to sink a ton of money into a business and find no customers.

tell congress you don't want to take part in any more of they're wasteful spending...

the only people in the area are lawyers. People going to court or to visit a lawyer are not gonna be interested in a shopping trip

Has no one around here ever left Salisbury before? Other cities take areas exactly like our downtown plaza and make it the cultural centerpiece of the city. People are acting like we are crazy for suggesting that we invest time energy and money into this area... All I have to say is you need to get out!!!

Fill Main street with medical marijuana cafe's. That will cause a demand for more eateries. Business will once again thrive.
