Saggy Pants Fines Bring City $3,916.49

Albany, Georgia is raking in the dough by fining people who violate the city's saggy pants ban.

The Albany Herald reports that in the past 9 months, the city has issued 187 saggy pants citations and collected $3,916.49 in fines. The ordinance bans anyone from wearing pants or skirts more than three inches below the tops of the hips which expose bare skin or underwear.

A first-time violation is $25. Repeated offenders can get fined up to $200.

Another culture thing

I like that law. I'm wondering, though,if it could pass judicial examination. As 6:00 says, it is largely a "culture thing." Is it, then, legal to fine someone for showing his underwear, even if we are turned off by it? It's not indecent exposure.

Good for Albany, Georgia. Now when will this begin in Salisbury, MD?????

I agree with 8:22. It's not legally indecent exposure but all that means is we need to change our indecent exposure laws too. I don't see anyone "who actually votes" that would go against a new law. Change that first then bring this law to MD (even better bring it to the federal government).

I hear it all the time: "We want government OUT of our lives!".
Yet a story like this gets posted and some of you jump right on it wanting the GOV'T to set new laws.
Really?

Charge them with disturbing the peace or being a public nuisance, this usually covers everything. Also, just talking to them about how their dressed will bring out belligerent behavior , so now you can charge them for disobeying an law enforcement officer, swearing in public, if your town has an law on that, if they get real uppity then charge them with “Terroristic Threats” and taz them!

I think it looks ignorant, but toatlly agree with 9:37. How is this legal? Where does it stop? Let's tax the muffin tops, spandex, tramp stamps, tat sleeves and funky piercings too.

Start applying these arbitrary laws and bans to people with the will and the means to fight back you tyrants!
