Suspect Attempts To Grab OCPD Officers Gun

On September 27, 2011 at approximately 11 p.m., an Ocean City Police Officer was on foot patrol in the area of the Food Lion grocery store, located at 118th Street and Coastal Highway
.
OCPD Officer Kyle Hayes spotted a male later identified as Ousmane Boubou Idrissa, 42, of Ocean City, exiting the Food Lion Grocery Store. OFC Hayes noticed a bulge under the waistband and front right pocket area of Idrissa’s clothing. OFC Hayes further observed Idrissa was not carrying any grocery bags.

Suspecting that Idrissa may have shoplifted some items from the Food Lion, OFC Hayes approached him and asked what was under his clothing. Idrissa responded he had nothing and attempted to leave the area. OFC Hayes knowing this was not true attempted to detain Idrissa who then attempted to flee on foot.

OFC Hayes pursued Idrissa; a struggle ensued during which Idrissa grabbed OFC Hayes’ holstered firearm at least twice during the struggle. OFC Hayes was able to keep Idrissa from removing the weapon and eventually subdued Idrissa until additional officers arrived at the scene.

Idrissa was treated by Ocean City paramedics for minor injuries sustained during the struggle. OFC Hayes was not injured. At the time of the encounter Idrissa was found to be in possession of stolen Food Lion grocery items. Idrissa was arrested and charged with:

Theft Under $100 (misdemeanor)
2nd Degree Assault (misdemeanor)
Resisting Arrest (misdemeanor)
Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer (felony)
Idrissa was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and is being held on $10,000 bond.
