Man Charged With Trying To Run Over Attorney

As Steve Beatty returned his shopping cart to the Safeway Food Store in Pasadena on Sunday, he didn't give much thought to the dark 2010 Volkswagen Jetta coming his way.

The car, which police say was driven by 36-year-old Erik Smith of Glen Burnie, was nearly 100 yards away and the parking lot speed limit was 10 miles per hour.

"I didn't even think about him," said Beatty, a 42-year-old defense attorney in Baltimore City who ran unsuccessfully for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge in 2004.

But Beatty found himself being chased by the Jetta. And Smith, who had no previous criminal history in Maryland, is charged with trying to hit Beatty with his car. Twice.

"It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced," Beatty said.

Shame he missed the first time. Maybe his next client will have better aim. Let's all hope.
