FORT BRAGG, Calif. - A well-respected California community leader who was gunned down after finding a remote illegal marijuana operation was a two-term mayor whose fundraising and goodwill helped build firehouses and a first-class high school football stadium.
The city of Fort Bragg was reeling Monday after the death of longtime Councilman Jere Melo, a forest land manager who was fatally shot Saturday while he and a co-worker were walking through a rugged area of timber land just outside town.
A manhunt continued for the suspected gunman.

Which one was it? "Remote" or "just outside of town"? Can't be both. And THAT'S what many many people do in their spare time --- take a walk in rugged back country. He shouldn't have been shot at, or killed, but even on the East Coast, we hear it's dangerous to walk around in the forests out there. He didn't know that? Or didn't think the mexican mafia would blow him away? They kill POLICE in their country. A councilman in the USA? Not even a second thought. All we need is 50 more years and another trillion dollars and we can beat this drug thing....(for the record, I'm sorry for this man and his family...a good man is gone...)
