While the consequences of his actions were not as horrific as those of the San Francisco police department over the weekend, this Newark, New Jersey police officer provides us a glimpse into the culture that seems to be pervading police departments across the United States. While there are no doubt great officers out there – those who understand what the Constitution stands for and the importance of ensuring that the Rule of Law is protected – it is the bad apples, who act not as servants of the people, but rather, agents of tyranny, that have lead the majority of Americans to distrust law enforcement in general.

Hes a big man, take out the knee. Then the throat. Big man down. Then dont much matter what you do.
Thats 300 pounds. The early bird gets the worm,so to say.
He must of been havin a really bad day. I bet there is a woman in his life behind it.
Big guy married a little skinny white woman that drove him out of his mind, so he took it out on the little white man. Good lord.
Lexington Steeles cousin.
I go in askin for million and settle for 450K.
Just to clarify the SF cops were shot at as the suspect(also a suspect in a homicide)ran from them. They returned fire and hit him. There are other videos that show the gun still lying on the ground which was also later recovered after viweing the videos. The crowd and the suspect were the problems. Please get the facts before judging.
Betcha Obama gets him off with a beer summet.
I'm a retired police officer... I viewed the video. But I did not see the entire unedited video. Much like the "motorist Rodney King" who was driving a stolen car during a 100 + MPH chase and kicked and punched officers when he finally stopped (ya didn't see that, did ya?) you haven't seen the entire story. Did this officer over step his bounds? Until you know the full story, yo just don't know. Newark is not a nice place. Not in any way.
Let the the Monday Morning quarterbacks deal with it.

What the hell are you talking about?
10:21 PM
Since you are the only one worth responding too....
Since ur a retired cop it's no small wonder you would stick up for one of your own.
One doesn't need to see the entire 'undedited' video to see that this cop was WAY out of line.
This was a cameraman from a news organazation. Not some gang memeber. As the said, he has a constitutional right to record that event.
The cop was giving an unlawful order when he told the cameraman to put the camera down. And this all happened on public property.
Thank goodness there was a councilwoman present at this event. I'm sure she will make sure an invesigation is conducted, rightfully so.
The only thing you posted that I can agree with is that Newark is not a nice place. But that in no way even comes close to justify what this 'cop' did.
The state doen't have a case but I really hope they decide to prosecute. I would love for this cop to get slammed in a courtroom. And I have no doubt whatsoever that is exactly what would happen.
This isn't some ordinary citizen he assaulted. He is part of a news team with plenty of money and lawyers to see to it that justice is not only served but on a silver platter as well.
I'm really biting my tongue to not blast you for even suggesting that there was some cause for that 'abuse of power cop' to deny this man his rights, assault him by putting him in a choke hold and threaten to do the same to the woman that was with him.
And then you insult potential commenters by calling them monday morning quarterbacks. You must have retired in the 70's. I think police in general have progressed away from your way of thinking.
Even if what you say about Rodney were true, it does not matter. The point in that case was he being beaten AFTER he was subdued. But it's ok in your mind because the cops deserved a little payback right?
Back to this case, I hope the cop gets fired for such a blatant abuse of power and disregard for peoples rights and overall health.
If he did it to an ordinary citizen it might have gotten swept under the rug like so many other abuses. I don't see that happening in this case, ESPECIALLY since there was a council woman present.
Keep us informed of this Joe. This is one worth following.
There are good cops out there but they are soon corrupted because they stick together and they are coerced into defending and protecting the bad apples.
This seems to apply to you iron.
In Maryland, if an intruder breaks into you home, and does whatever, could even point a gun at you, if he turns and tries to leave and you SHOOT HIM IN THE BACK, you will be charged.
Why is it any different for those cops in SF?
This happened back in 2008
why didn't he put the camera down? Duh !!
In situations like these the camera is your best defense. He was well within his rights to video on public property. The video will get this cop convicted. I have no doubt that justice will be done in this case.
5:50 "why didn't he put the camera down? Duh !!"
Because the cop had no right to instruct him to do so. There is nothing else which needs to be seen in that video, it's a certainty.
And just as I have no doubt that the guy the SF police shot had a record of crimes,
I think it's a safe bet the cop in Newark has had other incidents of violating civil rights. If so he should be fired. - David Hearne

I agree with everything you said, but I woulod add that the cops chould be charged with violating the cameramans civil right too, and have the book thrown at him.
These stupid cops need to learn that straping on a badge and gun doen't give you the right to push people around.
Sooner or later an icident like this is going to be the spark that starts the revolution.
When that happens, the last person in the world you will want to be is a cop
why didn't he put the camera down? Duh !!
Because he did not have to. The cop issued an illegal order. The arrest was also illegal. The cameraman would have been within his constitutional rights to resist that arrest if he chose to.
But he did the smarter thing, he sued the hell outta them. Which is nothing new for Newark as it turns out.
the cop told him to put the camera away. he didnt do it after multiple requests. shouldve shot the cameraman in my opinion.
Anon 8:40 Another cop? Wouldn't be surprised.
In my experience I've found that a certain type is attracted to law enforcement, corrections, politics and other occupations where they are handed a great deal of unearned, undeserved power (dare I say it? even some in the military) over others. They quickly become "little Mussolini's" who you question only at great peril to your physical safety, well-being and even your freedom. The cop in this video fits this type to a T. And, my God, OF COURSE I DON'T INCLUDE EVERYONE IN THESE OCCUPATIONS IN THIS CATEGORY! There would seem, though, to be a high proportion of them within these fields.
8:40 AM
In my opinion, you should be shot just for being stupid.
Shoot a man holding only a video camera? An unarmed man? Hope you're joking, 8:40. Wouldn't want to have to defend that in court. . .unless I had Casey Anthony's lawyer.
9:03 AM
Agreed.
the only person charged is the camera man in wicomico county that cameraman would be the one in court trying to defend himself and everyone knows that in wicomico county the police are always right and he would be found guilty and be on the wicomico county railroad to jail time probation or both
5:50 you are a good sheep.
5:50 you are a good sheep.
