The budget passed this week by the Worcester County Board of Education made substantial cuts to services and the board expects that next year will be even worse.
On Tuesday, the board adopted its $90.3 million operating budget for the coming year. An additional $847,000 will be spent on technology, capital projects and retirement costs.
The budget is known as a “maintenance of effort” budget, meaning the county only funded the budget at the minimum level required by state law. The maintenance of effort law says counties must offer, at a minimum, the same per-pupil funding as the previous year, or risk losing state education aid.
