OC Gas Promotion Plan to Remain a Secret

The presentation made by Ocean City’s advertising agency on how to market the gas giveaway promotion will remain a secret, even though the free gas idea was abandoned by the City Council behind closed doors last week.

Requests this week from the media and some council members that the plan be made public were rejected by city officials, who said they needed to protect the marketing approach from idea poachers in other areas.

After the council decided to run a promotion this summer to offer free gas to visitors, Baltimore based MGH Advertising presented a marketing plan to the council at a closed meeting that also excluded members of the Tourism Advisory Board.

Councilman Doug Cymek was the swing vote that allowed the free gas promotion to proceed when he offered to support it if the council would agree to another promotion involving the local golf marketing companies. He said from the beginning that he did not favor giving away gas and he changed his vote after receiving numerous letters from residents opposing the gas plan.
