Special Weather Announcement For Some Wicomico Schools

Dr. John Fredericksen, Superintendent of Wicomico County Public Schools, shared this information by a ParentLink call to families of students at several Wicomico Schools Tuesday night, in expectation of continued high temperatures Wednesday, June 1:

"We share families' concerns for safe temperatures in non-air-conditioned schools.

If your child attends Bennett Middle School, East Salisbury Elementary, Northwestern Elementary, Pittsville Elementary-Middle, or West Salisbury Elementary and the temperatures tomorrow are over 90 degrees, you may keep your child home, send us a note, and your child will be granted an excused absence.

School will be held, transportation operated, and instruction will be provided for all students who attend.

Please dress appropriately, drink plenty of water, and stay safe."

When I went to Bennett(late 90s), if it got over 90 degrees the school would close; and b/c of it the a/c'd high schools would as well. If it's over 90, close them down.

This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!!!! Here is a solution: Cut out spring break and all the other useless days off and lets get out before Memorial Day - wouldn't have to worry about this!!!!
Also, the students you are sending home- most likely have no a/c at home!!!!!!! Just another typical excuse to get out of school!!!!!!

Thats an easy call to make from his air conditioned office at the BOE!! Like to see him sit at a desk all day at Bennett Middle!! One flake of snow and the schools are closed, yet students are being baked by the same decision maker! He's gotta go!!

Start the school year earlier and end it earlier and like a previous commenter stated, cut back on all the "days off".
Delmar has A/C but all this week, the kids are going 1/2 days. That makes NO sense! Bring them in 2 full days and a 1/2 day and be done with it.
On top of it, most have been doing nothing anyway but watching movies!
When I was in school, this final week is when we had all of our final exams!

It is generally hot in late August and early September. The temps of late have been well above average. No matter what Dr. F does or says puts him in the "damned if I do, damned if I don't" situation. Neither can they singlehandly build schools to meet parents standards. Do you think the kids are suffering from the heat anymore than the teaching staff. I note that staff will be at the schools for the children who attend school in the heat and children will be assigned an excused absence if the parents choose for the child to stay home. What more can you ask of the school system?

The first thing you complainers should do is find out what guidelines the BOE is required to abide by in order to receive federal and state monies to educate the children. It would be more helpful to spend your time and energy finding solutions than critcising WCBOE and Dr F. on a blog. Most of you sound like fools with your know it all attitudes!

Come on. The human body can tolerate this, particularly if you are that young. Let teach our families and children that a little uncomfortable-ness is a part of life. I don't fault the schools for this type of edict. I place fault on the parents and the community at large. If the schools don't do these things they will be sued.

...and the general public will criticise the schools for not closing under these circumstances.

I'm sure many of us went to school here before A/C and we didn't get days off and school closed early. Spoiled and whinny is more like it.

Agree 100% 11:28 and 11:29! I attended Bennett Jr. in the early '80's and we made it through just fine.

We didn't have ac when I went to school and I am still here.

Wasn't the most outstanding part of Dr. F.'s resume when he applied here that he had gotten air conditioning in each of the school buildings in his MINNESOTA school district? Now that's an educator!!!!!

instead of one school (i.e. Bennett) being super high-tech, decked out to the 9's with the best of everything... how about giving students at the older schools some of the basic necessities??? a/c is a good example.

Minn. really needs ac. You can play football, baseball soccer, lacrossee outside, but you can't sit in a room doing nothing? Buck up people. You won't die without air conditioning! Get some fans & turn 'em on. A lot cheaper. (You can blow 'em over a tub of ice, also
