Salisbury SuperFresh Is Closing Their Doors At 6 PM Tonight, But Wait.......

UPDATE: We have been informed by an alleged employee of this SuperFresh that their doors will now open at 9:00 AM and not 7:00 AM.

They'll close their doors at 6 PM tonight but reopen again at 7:00 AM Friday morning with sale signs everywhere on certain items.

I've been informed the process of final closing could take 4 to 5 weeks and SuperFresh will continue to stock items like milk, soda, bread, ground beef and items of such.

However, they will discontinue lunch meats and many other items you don't buy on a daily basis. Of course we're talking about the store on West College Ave in Salisbury.

One last thing. ALL Sale Ads will no longer be honored after today. Once again, news and information only found on Salisbury News.

First of all, calling every employee unskilled is very disrespectful. Most of the long term employees do jobs that require skill, placing the orders, preparing the products, serving the customers....and they do it with pride. Not all do, but most that really cared.

Secondly, this is less of a union issue than a total company issue. By in large, the Super Fresh stores on the Eastern Shore of Md and DE were all moneymakers, and 10-15 years ago before all the food dogs and wal farts came in they were the cream of the crop. Now fast forward to some very questionable business dealings over the last 10 years (i. e. selling of Eight O'Clock coffee division, selling of the A & P Canada division, the buying of Clemons stores in Philly area, putting in 50-60,000 sqft stores in areas that couldn't sustain them, ....) not to mention buying up the Pathmark stores. How anyone thought that taking two losing companies and putting them together was going to make a positive is beyond any of us who worked for them.

Lastly, I think that when it's all over, people will think, "gee I wonder what a fresh cut steak or ground beef even looks like?" Because friend, wal fart doesn't have meat cutters. And it won't be long before to remain competetive, all the grocery stores will go to pre-pack products.

Sorry, but Superfresh is NOT a union shop.

Its parent company, A&P, is going into bankruptcy. Remember, the Superfresh on the north end did not close because it was losing money. They closed it because it wasn't turning ENOUGH profit.

This is not something you can blame on the city of Salisbury. The whole nation is in an economic toilet. Do you think Salisbury is somehow immune to that?

I'm really sorry for the good folks who work there. What a terrible thing for them and for the community. Now is the time for us to be supportive of one another, not doing stupid blame games like most of these comments are.

let go
support your local farmers
go to the farmers market or join one of the local subscription farms and get fresh produce all summer
go to Hastings butcher shop in delmar
the problem with this economy is it's hyper consumerism and packaged crap being trucked all over the place
one thing like gas prices a freeze a drought or flood and we have a pricing butterfly effect across the board because we are dependent

Fresh CUT makes it fresh?

Agree, not an union issue, got to admit, Walmart has best prices around, but the best real meat cuts are at Giant. I hope they never close their doors...

Unions are not the problem. The problem was companies exploiting workers and keeping them from escaping poverty long before Wal-Mart came into the picture.

Wal-Mart then capitalized on the untapped market of lower income workers. They gained a foothold & they now have the foundation in place.

And its to late for other companies to expand and adjust their prices before running out of liquid assets.

It's hard to convince investors to front the money it would take to both have the store count and bulk purchase power of walmart, as they would be waiting eons on the returns in the current economic situation. Advertising, finding the exporting/importing, brand recognition, fuel costs & distribution all while staying in the red against a monolithic company in the black the entire way there.

The rich made their bed and now they're getting to lay in it. Trickle down economics was the motto and now as your houses values are plunging lower & your breadbasket companies are going out of business you too will experience how it is to have those with the money capitalize on your misfortune.

This isn't directed towards Superfresh but to every board member of the American corporate conglomerate.

Anon 8:23, you must have missed your ride on the short bus today

FYI, a lot of the produce we (Super Fresh) sell IS local- melons, lopes, corn, tomatoes, peppers all come into season and are supplied by contracted local farmers, so they are going to lose business as well, we have some suppliers that grow specifically for our stores, now they will have to market their own or find another buyer. How would you like to have spent all that money planning your farm out and then told, sorry we can't buy from you. Try and pay your farm mortgage or tractor payment on that.

Anon 8:09
We didn't close the north pointe store, we sold it to Giant because we were tipped off that wal fart was going super center within the next 12 months. We aren't "going" into bankruptcy, we filed chapter 13 back in December. You want facts, then talk to employees who are going to be out of work in two months.

I think its great this store is closing the employees and manager there are some of the rudest and dumbest people I have ever come in contact with. We stopped shopping there because of the way they treated people shopping in the store. I see it as they killed their own business they didn't need any help doing it. Glad to see them go!

The union also wants to get their hands on Labinal (what used to be Harvard) They will end up just like the others. The company will move out of town in a short amount of time. Wise up....the union is NOT the way to go. You might get a small raise but you will be out of a job in a short time as well.

I am very sad this store is closing. I moved to Salisbury in 1998 when I started at (then) Salisbury University. Superfresh offered the best selection for the price, so my husband and I shopped there instead of Food Lion or Giant. I have "known" many of the employees for years as I continued to shop there. I have never had a problem in their store, the staff has always been very helpful and kind, and I have always found the store to be clean and offer good prices and good food.
p.s. I hate Walmart

If it wasn't trucked all over the place this country would starve.

It's a grocery store, and a high price one at that.

There are twenty more. Take your pick. Few months from now and you won't remember their name.

Only found on Salisbury News? So the hours of the store is a big scoop? Come on...you are really stretching it. Lose the sensational angle and you might make it to version 2.0 one day.

To June 2 9:36 pm, I will pray for you. Anyone glad to see 85 people loose their jobs, health care and maybe their homes needs prayer. I pray God removes your head from you back side and puts it back on your shoulders. I hope he sends you to OZ to get a heart. You must be a bitter person, I believe what goes around, come around, I wish you such. One more store going, watch prices go up at Wal mart.

I've gotta say, a lot of these comments are just plain hurtful. Some of you obviously have no empathy for others....... I am one of the "unskilled" workers at this location. I was finally working a job I absolutely loved and now my life is drastically changing. I am sure many of you will scoff and have ridiculous comments but even though I am losing nearly everything right now, I can go to sleep at night knowing I am a good person. In time, hopefully those of you with the callous comments will somehow understand how all of this feels to the people experiencing job loss first hand and not be so quick to make what you think are witty comments.
I am not signing my name because I do not want my child to feel the wrath of some of you absolutely malicious people..........

We empathize with you. Just the jerk overly promoting the store and his 'butcherness' that we object to, and I use 'we' loosely.

I am the manager at Super Fresh and this is in response to the comment of me being rude. I have never been disrespectful to any customer. I have always tried to solve any issue customers may have had. I have delivered patio sets, porch swings, etc, all over town for customers that had no way to get them home. I have taken groceries to people that left them behind at the store. And as far as my employees, some of these people work 2 jobs to make ends meet. Everyone has a bad day now and then but just to let you know my store is the number one store in the entire A&P Company in MIP, which is make it personal mystery shop program, and most of the scoring on this is employee friendliness. My DM stated to me last week he was going to miss our 100% scores that help bring up his district scores. I invite you in for a cup of coffee and you can tell me when I was rude to you. In closing I wan't to thank all of my Loyal Customers who have come in week after week through the years going back to when I ran the old store in Fruitland. Your patronage was deeply appreciated.
