Letter to the Editor

Dear Salisbury News:

I live on Zion Church Rd.  I just found out that our Sheriff’s Department has done away with hand-held radar.   I guess this is the reason that they don't set up like they used to do.

Traffic on my road runs any speed they want  from 5:00 am till 10:00 pm. I would like to known why there hasn’t  been any traffic patrol set up.

I have called the police several times.  All I get is, “I’ll refer you “so and so” and voice mail . It is time they start enforcing the law.  That includes all of the wide tires on these pickup.

NAME WITHELD

B**ch, b**ch, b**ch! I guess your street is the only one in the county? What a crybaby!

It will never happen. We have begged the sheriff's office to set up on our road and they did one time (back when Nelm's was sheriff). We have offered to let them sit in our driveway and even offered to give them written permission. I have gone as far as offering them food and drink so they would.

What does wide tires have to do with speeding? Just curious. I understand the speeding issue completely I live in an area with a lot of kids playing.

10:04 Agree 100%.

Poster should offer to pay for the hiring, training, and annual cost of an additional Deputy - upfront. Bet WCSO would gladly share in the net fines, after deducting cost of prosecution. Whoops - WCSO doesn't get any money for traffic enforcement. If OP doesn't want to pay then the the Sheriff's Office will just have continue doing their jobs serving the entire County with priority based on professional evaluation of needs.

Hose them down. Take your hose and spray all the speeders with your hose. It is only water and they will start slowing down to see if you are out there to spray them.

How do you know they are speeding? That road is 40 mph. It may be a good idea to stand in your front yard and have your husband drive down the road at 40 so you can see what it actually is. Many times people think vehicles are traveling faster than they really are. As for kids playing, they don't belong in the street. That is what parenting and back yards is for.

I told you so said...

You aren't going to please everybody. Not long ago, there was a post about Fruitland officers enforcing laws in a parking lot and how they run radar and everyone was crying about that, now people are crying because they aren't being enforced on your road. What do you all want?

11:18 What is the need to have wide tires and a loud exhaust? Trying to make up for other short comings?

Are you watching your road 24/7? I have never seen them in my neighborhood either but I have a few neighbors who got tickets. I know they are there. You can buy a set of stop sticks on ebay and handle on your own.

So I guess you want all 8 deputies working at one time to do nothing but run radar? When would you like them to run the 50,000 plus calls a year?

Take an active approach & post signs in your yard reminding drivers of the speed limit. Are there "Children At Play" signs posted there. If not, make an effort to get them posted there. Do something besides picking up the phone. Video the speeders yourself since you are home allllllllll day watching the amount of traffic from 5am to 10pm (whew...sounds like a tiring full time job). Take the evidence to the Sheriff's office instead of just calling over there. Be proactive! You could have had 2 speeders caught on tape by the time you typed your complaints on this site. Don't forget, you live on only 1 road of many in the county. My taxes don't pay for an officer to sit in your driveway from 5am to 10pm.

I'd much rather the police focus on violent crime instead of nuisance issues like speeding. Keep your kids in your yard or if you're an "absentee parent" put them on a leash, better yet stop breeding.

Seems like the rednecks are out in force here. If you actually read the press releases the sheriff's dept releases, it seems like they have more than enough time to help a citizen of this county. The sheriff's dept does not handle the severly violent crime. That would normally be the MSP or Salisbury Police. The author of the letter deserves the same treatment as ANY other citizen of this county. Remember that one day you may need their help and receive the same ignorement.

i love in zion church road as well. near the curve and people have crashed in my yard NUMEROUS times in the 9 years i've lived here. people DO speed on this road. but not anymore than they do on any other road. our road does not deserve special treatment.

there's more important things for the police to worry about than speeders on our road. I'd much rather them focus their attention on the home invasions, bank robberies, murders, etc.

thanks.
