ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - As early voting begins in Maryland this week for the first time, political observers question how much impact it will have on voter turnout during the primary and general elections.
Maryland voters will be able to cast ballots on Friday _ 11 days before the Sept. 14 primary.
Michael Cain, director of the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary's College of Maryland, says while early voting tends to increase voter turnout in a state when it is first implemented, he doesn't expect it will have a large impact on its own.
Donald Norris, chairman of the Department of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, says he believes early voting is "a big yawn" in terms of increasing voter turnout, even if it does make voting more convenient.
