If only the City of Salisbury could be so lucky s to have SIX solid candidates to run for Office.
As always, it's a great pleasure making that ride from Delmar, DE. to Princess Anne to join in their political interests. Each candidate was sincere and answered tough questions. While I didn't like the format of this forum, a question to one candidate who had 2 minutes to respond and then a rebuttal from the next candidate, then they moved on to a new question. I would have enjoyed seeing each and every candidate answer each question, there was no need for a rebuttal.
Two things really stood out in this forum. One was, "Students from UMES feel discriminated and not welcome." That really blew my mind, considering all I have witnessed between the Commissioners and UMES. It's a shame ANY student would feel this way. However, the next thing that blew me away might answer why there are such problems.
The second was a quote another candidate made. "With the price of gas, none of us want to travel to Salisbury just to buy a shirt." Wow, I can relate! The discussion went on talking about how they need to bring retail business to Princess Anne and build on their economic and development.
Bringing more businesses to a now college town would be a very wise move. These businesses could provide more full and part time jobs, especially to those students at UMES.
I don't know about you Folks but one thing I can tell you from experience. I believe Princess Anne has a much bigger opportunity for successful businesses than ANY other location right now on the entire Eastern Shore. I said it years ago about Pittsville being yet another area with great potential. I personally bought 14 properties in Pittsville as an investment because I do believe when things turn around both Princess Anne and Pittsville will boom.
All is all, I enjoyed this forum. I also enjoyed seeing some 110+ people attending this event. As I mentioned earlier, all six of these candidates are good choices. My guess would be, the persons willing to work the hardest for your vote will fill the three seats open in this election.

i live outside princess anne, and well, i dont want development, leave it in salsibury. i moved here to get away from all that.
now about the college kids, they may feel unwelcomed, but they can fill the city coffers if they fine them for all the speeding they do
On a weekly basis,the two Somerset County newspapers have numerous police calls listed to Talon Square and other student housing areas for large unruly drunk crowds(400+ people),not to mention countless other criminal activities.Seriously.Not a week goes by that PA police arent busy with college kids.If they want to feel as welcome in town as their money is,then maybe they should behave themselves.They make Animal House look like Romper Room.
Joe,you should sit it on the Crisfield candidates forum-bound to be more interesting lol.
If candidates weren't vilified; if Council members did more than nit-pick and try to micro-manage, then qualified people might run in Salisbury.
Who would want to waste their time with the Four Fools?

It's been my experience that many of the students at UMES have no interest in Princess Anne or Somerset County outside of the campus and the student housing. Most come from suburban, metro inner city areas and after their first week at school act like they've been abandoned in the park. Many don't stay most weekends and commute back to their homes, where they are more comfortable. Rural Princess Anne has nothing to offer them. The ones who wish to shop go to Salisbury, simply because many of the stores could not make it year round in the economy provided in Somerset County. With a high rate of unemployment and a large portion of the county on welfare, disability or some other form of tax payer funded income, it would be hard pressed to have an upscale store survive. Somerset County has always been a "staple community". The businesses that make it offer the essentials. Now, people travel to Salisbury when they want to "shop". In the past we went to the catalog stores or ordered it mail order. Hell my house plans were purchased from Sears, and the materials came from CH Hayman's Hardware, but the accents had to be bought in Salisbury. Few business owners will make a million in Somerset, they offer a service or product necessary and get by on a less than stellar profit. Don't get me wrong, Somerset doesn't help itself, many good businesses that may have strengthened the county's economy have been turned away, but in Princess Anne, catering to the college would not be an economically sound decision by private business owner, outside of the food and beverage markets.
