NJ Governor Christie To Teacher: You Can Quit

New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie told a disgruntled teacher that if she doesn’t like the pay, she doesn’t “have to do it.”

Christie was speaking to a small crowd in a church gymnasium in Rutherford on Tuesday when the Bergen County Record caught the exchange between Kearny teacher Rita Wilson and the governor.

Wilson claimed that if she were getting paid only three dollars an hour for the 30 students she teaches, her salary would be $83,000 a year, a much higher sum than her current take.

“You’re getting more than that if you include the cost of your benefits,” Christie pointed out.

The teacher responded by saying that she has a master’s degree and that her current salary isn’t compensating her for the value of her higher education as well as her experience.

To that, the governor responded: “Well, you know then that you don’t have to do it.”

Well said, Governor.

Come on people...think this through. Let's say the teacher (and many others like her) take your advice...walk away. Suddenly you don't have enough to teach your children. In order to attract more people to the teaching profession, you have to...offer them more money!

Why not head that off at the pass by paying a bit more now for the ones that are already in place? Just makes good financial sense.

Let them walk. Where are they going to find another job paying what they are making now with all the benefits they get. Im sure there are others out there that are looking for a job and would be happy to have one.

Bless you Gov Christie. Everyone should understand that They are not worth any more money than they are getting; if they were they'd be getting it. The argument that you have to pay too much for a teacher would be fine if they were in short supply or doing at least a mediocre job at educating.

Teaching is what one does when they ilke to hear their own voice and they could not excel in the math science field. LOl

They will bring up what degree of eductaion they have. "I got a double Phd & masters in b.s.

I have never heard a research scientist talk about the level of their eduction when request funding.

The bottom line is you get what you pay for in all fields. As for Gov. of New Jersey the most corrupt state in the union, becuase of unions. Do your homework the Jersey Gov. is a major liberal.

manipulated political propaganda. Great job Joe A.

I have family in NJ who are teachers. NJ teachers are among the highest paid teachers in the US. I'm all for paying teachers what they deserve but their pension benefits are insane; its a ponzi scheme. If they live to be 65, they will take out more than they will ever put into the system.

83 grand a year with holidays and summers off AND government benefits? She's not happy with that? Let her walk.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

"The New Jersey governor is a major liberal." I think that 10:54 hasn't done his/her homework. That is like saying that Obama is a major conservative! If you have to post on a blog, you should really try to same something remotely accurate, if not intelligent!

As a teacher, I have no complaints about what I make, including my benifits. However, let's all please note that teaching is not quite the cakewalk some make it out to be. If we are really serious about having top quality teachers, then we need to do one thing nationally - abolish tenure. Now, there are sure to be more than a few posts from angry teachers about that, but it is the truth. If tenure is abolished, a few things happen. First, all those teachers who do a poor job can be weeded out and either fired or 'retired'. Second, the dead wood would be eliminated, and many of those teachers at the high end of the teacher's scale would make room in the budgets, and finally, the profession would begin to garner the respect deserved as only the best would remain. I take exception to the comment made by 3:41 as well, but until we, as teachers, do something to clean up our own house, comments like this will continue. For those who complain in this blog (and others like it), it is time to do something responsible and contact our legislators to push for this.
