Buying an adorable puppy or kitten at your local pet store may become a thing of the past, if more American cities join a small but growing movement to ban retail pet sales.
West Hollywood, Calif., became the latest city to put a leash on pet sales in February, when its city council unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting sales of dogs and cats in retail stores. Albuquerque, N.M., and South Lake Tahoe, Calif., have also banned pet sales. Other cities in Florida, New Mexico, Missouri and elsewhere are considering similar bans on the sale of dogs and cats.
Animal advocates say pet store sales fuel the puppy mill industry, where dogs are bred and raised in cramped, unhealthy and inhumane conditions. They have similar concerns about "kitten factories," which are a smaller but growing problem. Efforts to crack down on animal mills have been hindered by limited enforcement resources, so ban proponents are shifting their focus from the supply side to the demand. Far better, they say, to adopt from a local shelter or buy directly from a reputable breeder.

100% correct.
There should be a nationwide ban until every animal in a shelter has a home. Then maybe license a handful of breeders and sellers per area beyond that.
I am looking to get a large breed puppy to replace one whom has just passed.Does anyone know of any pups available?Large or Extra large only please.
Go to the humane society and you will get the best pet.
Bravo!
If they want to control "puppy mills" then they should regulate puppy mills and not come down on legitimate businesses. If the storefront shop is mistreating the animals deal with them, if their source is a "puppy mill" then deal with the source. Laws like this are ridiculous and punish the wrong business(es) and are anti-business. Punish the right people.
Yes, they should enforce the laws on the books they have now. A few years ago, I went to the Flea Market at Bargain Bill's. I could hardly sleep that night for thinking about the very sick pups that were there for sale. I think they finally stopped letting them sell dogs, but not sure. Anyway, I Never went back! I know they were reported several times.
Between my parents and siblings we have six “Brown” dog all rescued from humane societies. I say “Brown” because we really have no idea what kind of dogs they are. And know what? I like it that way. All these people with their expensive designer breads need to get over themselves. One of my mutts has a 16th birthday in August. Best dogs in the world! Go to the shelter and get yourself a “Brown muttly”! And remember, there are only two kinds of dogs. Dogs that ARE brown and dogs that WISH they where brown!
