Clock Ticking On 100,000 Teachers' Jobs

'We desperately need Congress ... to recognize the emergency for what it is'

Senior congressional Democrats and the Obama administration scrambled Wednesday to line up support for $23 billion in federal aid to avert an estimated 100,000 or more school layoffs in a brutal year for education budgets coast to coast.

As early as Thursday, the House Appropriations Committee expects to take up a bill that couples the school funding with spending for the Afghanistan war — a measure that has bipartisan support. But a parallel push in the Senate stalled this week after a leading proponent concluded that he couldn't muster enough votes to surmount Republican opposition.

"We desperately need Congress to act — to recognize the emergency for what it is," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Wednesday on Capitol Hill. "We have to keep hundreds of thousands of teachers teaching."

If they didn't overspend annually, we wouldnt be in this situation. See what happens when the "stimulus" just fills municipalities coffers in order to cover budget shortfalls...they come back beggin for more!

It's time to downsize. Good things are being forced to happen.

iI would give those politicians with their smug attitudes a lot more credence when they start takintg pay cuts with the rest of us. Instead they expand their private army (the so-called "security detail"), expand their already bloated staff, flaunt the law (ever seen them flying by you on the highway at 80-90 miles an hour BEING DRIVEN BY THE STATE POLICE!!) and generally spend tax dollars like its an open sipot of money? all the while, the average citizen is trying to figure out whether to pay the electric bill or buy groceries.

Why should they get a golden parachute at tax payers expense they got in bed with the Union they can pay the price !

Forget money for teachers. We need it for wars in Iraq & Afganistan.

Why is the answer always spending more money? Let's lay off administrators. Every job eliminated there saves 2-3 teacher jobs right now and a ton of retirement benefits down the road.
