One Council Meeting A Quarter

Last night about 50 working citizens turned up to see their county government in action.  A majority of the county council has deemed, up until now anyway, that the vast majority of working citizens only deserve to attend one meeting every three months.  Perhaps that will soon change.

Tuesday night was a full agenda.  There were three issues discussed which were near and dear to my heart:'

  • The proposal for a new county library on Beaglin Park Drive
  • Council holding AT LEAST one meeting per month at night
  • An elected school board

GA, with all do respect the 50 citizens that were there were for there pet projects, not the daily busisness of the county. Pet projects such as the county library. Night meetings are a waste of time and expense. According to your thought process that place should have been packed. A county with over 80,000 citizens should be filling those council chambers with several hundred people. To have council meetings at night to accommodate G.A. Harrison and Julie Brewington is not what this county needs. I say keep costs down by holding the meetings at their regular times during the day. Thanks anyway my friend. By the way you can always watch it on PAC 14.

Two items

First, ALL county meetings should be held at night. County Council members are NOT full time politicians and that is the last thing anyone wants. Look around, most counties have night meetings unless they are doing administrative workshops that are just about everyday work that needs to be done. Give the necessary personnel comp time or let them come in late the next day. Night meetings ARE NOT a waste of money.

Second, beware of the elected school board. It is not the answer. Check Dorchester County. The quality of candidates, attendance, and effectiveness will diminished drastically. Instead you will have candidates that have a pet project (school, etc). Everything else is supposed to wait while pet projects are attended to and once the pet project is done that member stops attending. It is unfair to the majority of students in the county. Please so not go to an elected school board.

2:10- I can see you simply don't support night meetings just because Ga and Julie are for it however, other people have voiced their support for more night meeting during the public comment section. Yet cowards like you have not spoke against night meetings in public.

The costs at holding meetings at night verses day are negligible 2:10 please give us your next objection to allowing working class citizens access to our local government and the decisions they do.

make, rather.

Allow me also to explain that the cost given were to operate the building per hour, regardless if it was occupied or not. The only exception to that is the security guard, which is $10 per hour. There is virtually no difference in holding the meeting at night verses day hours in terms of cost.

The night meetings are poorly attended which was obvious last night. It is also very obvious at the city council meetings.

Working class citizens? I believe Wicomico County has thousands of working class citizens and they don't just have day jobs. Most work shift work. 8-4, 4-12, and 12-8. Many work 24 hours shifts and many work 12 hour shifts. So you working class citizen theory is a moot point. It is just a preference that better suits your needs. If I am correct most working class citizens have vacation time don't they? If a meeting is that important to you then maybe you should use some of that vacation time. The meetings are only 2 hours twice a week so what is the problem? When there are important issues such as the budget then the meetings are usually held at night anyway. I have attended many of the council meetings and the best attendance is during the day and guess what? The majority of the people in the audience are "working class citizens."

Stick with the day meetings.

LMAO

Your analogy sucks. If this was the case then all elected positions should be appointed. You are an illiterate moron. Go back to school!!

7:15 Does it matter if they don't show up? Clearly demonstrated by the last 2 quarterly meetings, as well as Pollitt's and McCain's night and town halls that people turn out in the evening in very large numbers, as opposed to the traditional work hours, most of the meetings are held. Almost everyone in that room stood up last night when asked if they support night meetings.

You say you regularly attend the meetings during the day? If so, who are you because I try to fit those in too by taking time off of work like you suggest, and I am sure we would have met. If you attend you would also know the meetings usually are in excess of 3 hours. Typically speaking 10am to 1am or in last night's case 6pm to after 9pm.

Gail has done a good job in putting the legislative books on line for those who can't attend. That's an improvement, but one day and one night meeting would assure all those with various work hours could attend at least once a month.

I applaud the council's willingness to have open transparent government for all that want to get involved.

It's a good thing!

Save the libraries! Pittsville is a worthy branch to stay open that allows those without computers to use them, check their email, apply for jobs, apply for unemployment, check out books and videos...all for FREE! Don't let this valuable resource close!

You shouldn't have to unsubscibe if they aren't supposed to call you to begin with. That is what the do not call list is for.

anonymous 10:19, cut the BS. First of all, it's not Julie calling you. Secondly, YOU put your name and number on a list, (perhaps by a donation) and that's how you were contacted. Contact the proper people at the AFP and get it removed. It's that simple. Being ANONYMOUS on here isn't going top help sell your BS in the first place, fool.

I'm pretty sure she didn't call you, even if you dreamed she did.
