MAYOR IRETON: NOW HEAR THIS

Belton, Missouri declines to enter All-America City contest this year
By Allen Edmonds, The Star Herald

Despite its status as a finalist in the quest for All America City status last spring, Belton will sit out this year's competition due to the economy.

After parting ways with four employees last month and seeing Mayor’s Christmas Tree contributions plummet by some $1,500, Mayor Jimmy Odom said Monday he believes that spending money and resources on such an effort this year might send the wrong message.

"All our intentions were to apply again this year," Odom said, especially after it was announced that the competition would move from Florida to Kansas City for the next several years.

"But I asked for the city and the Vision Team to take a look at this again," in light of the worsening economic conditions.

"We just felt like it would send the wrong message to the employees that we’re asking to cut back on everything possible," and to citizens that may have lost jobs or had incomes reduced in recent months.

He said that even though the competition is being held in Kansas City, there are significant expenses involved in submitting the award application, as well as developing the presentation materials that would be used onstage at the competition.

Salisbury is a joke! All American City my butt. Sounds like the award is similar to those BS "awards" small businesses can recieve for a small fee of just $34.95!! Oh congratulations you are a record setter...high crime, low payscale, and high cancer rates...wow Salisbury is a gem!!

It would be wonderful if Salisbury made the same decision.

5:30 PM I couldn't have said it better myself. There is nothing in Salisbury that deserves any kind of award. Why do you have to pay money to win an award?

Mayor Ireton,

Grow some nads and give that man the promotion he deserves!!

Not this BS again.

Ireton is no better than Barrie.

No worries. Employee furlough days will help make up the cost for this and a bunch of other stuff.

What I've been saying for years 5:30. More of the lies get spread the more "awards" this area wins.

Its good to know there are smart individuals left in this world. Thanks 5:30 you give me hope.

The presentation materials were donated. They're trying to raise $14,400 to send the team to KC.

The award is about people working together not whining.

Get the facts straight, Joe.

Does anyone know why the Salisbury Fire Department is handing out light duty like it is candy. This is a good thing if someone needs it, but why are sick days offered if they are going to get light duty. Something to consider is they will be getting paid twice for there sick time because they didn't use it and then they will be able to count sick time towards there retirement. How much office work is there that all these light duty people are needed? These "injuries" did not happen on the job and they should stay home till they get better. Light duty is not offered to everyone, just fans of Bill Gordy and Rick Hoppes. Several firefighters have been denied light duty because "nothing is available." However, certain people have been given light duty several times which has lasted six month's to two years. This is a fact one person has been on light duty for almost 2 years. Is this appropriate? What does the Salisbury Employee Handbook say about it? The Salisbury Fire Department needs a chief in place now to discontinue all of this corruption.
