Mayor James Ireton, Jr., is pleased to announce that on Saturday, November 7, 2009, hundreds of lights will be strung downtown to decorate for the holiday season. Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local Union 24; students from Salisbury University; volunteers from Urban Salisbury; and Mayor Ireton will be putting up holiday lights along the Riverwalk and downtown.
These holiday lights were purchased thanks to the support of generous community sponsors who donated a total of $1,300. Additionally, Ace Hardware provided the lights at cost. The holiday lights will be put up on 24 poles along the river’s edge from Chesapeake East to the Marina, and also on trees downtown along Main Street, from Mill Street to Route 13.
“I thank all the businesses and individuals who helped the City raise the necessary funds to decorate our downtown for the holiday season,” said Mayor Ireton. “Their generosity in helping with holiday decorations will bring visitors to our downtown, which adds to the continued revitalization. Also, thanks to the members of the local IBEW, Salisbury University students, and Urban Salisbury for giving their time to put up these wonderful lights.”
Connie Strott with Urban Salisbury and the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District Steering Committee said, “This shows the enthusiasm of the community. Especially with the economy, every aspect of the community pulled together and donated time and money to help make Salisbury a great place to live. This truly shows how vibrant Salisbury is.”
Nick Caruso of the IBEW, Local Union 24, said, “It is for the community. It is what it’s all about!”
Julia Glanz of the Salisbury University SGA said, “Salisbury University students are excited for Saturday because we take such pride in Salisbury. We want to help with whatever we can to keep this community beautiful and full of life.”
Mayor Ireton and Urban Salisbury invite the public to the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on Friday, November 20, 2009, beginning at 5:00pm. Festivities will include choirs, bands, treats for the kids, and Santa’s Workshop. The tree lighting event will take place in front of the Government Office Building, 125 N. Division Street. Please come downtown, enjoy the festivities, and see the holiday lights!

I think it's a good thing. Even in the Great Depression, people went to see the movies for a little relief.
It's probably got Barrie drinking more too. She let a lot of things die in this town, especially downtown. Must stick in her craw to see people rallying with the new mayor (who ain't her or Bubba) to revive downtown.
Seeing all these different groups pulling together is nice.
Sorry, Barrie. You as Scrooge and your large green blogger friend who is a walking defamation of a Dr. Seuss character can team up in a movie, "Bah, Humbug, Salisbury!" and we'll watch it outdoors in that garden center, eating our popcorn balls and drinking hot cider and coco.
No-one I know gives one darn hoot about christmas this year. To busy trying to keep there lights ON then to go downtown to enjoy yours.
