I have worked this past yr with a Rescue Group & the very 1st dog I fostered came from a Puppy Mill in Ohio. Now, due to some health issues, I am limited to only the care of my own animals . I still offer my assistance to the Organization in what ever way I am able because of the good they do for these helpless animals. This letter is my way of "reaching out" to let others know the truth about these Puppy Mills and to encourage you & all your know to adopt from Rescue Groups, The HS, or reputable breeders! Always remember, if you don't see the parents of the puppy-------they are most likely from Puppy Mills!
Something that has truly amazed me over the past year is how many people I've spoken with are totally unaware of what a Puppy Mill is & ---- almost all puppy's in Pet Stores come directly from Puppy Mills , or from a broker who buys from them.
"Pet Smart", here in Salisbury, is to be highly commended because they NO LONGER SELL PUPPIES IN THEIR STORE! They now allow rescue groups in to show their animals up for adoption. Many have been able to find good homes because of Pet Smart! This is definitely something to consider when you go to purchase items for your animals next time.
It was almost a year before I could get up the nerve to look at information or videos about Puppy Mills on web sites. I felt I would not be able to watch some of the things I'd heard about . Finally, I thought ---- ---- you need to know so you will be informed should you speak out about these Mills, & if you do --- look how many could be helped .
I have gone to sites that are not that difficult to watch.-----Yes , they're unbelievable to me, but if I could watch them I know you will be able to also ,without any real stress.

Today, I'm sending this out to over 100 people-----If you pass this information on-----think of the good we can do for these helpless animals --- used strictly for breeding & doomed to a life of misery, only to be thrown out & killed when they can no longer reproduce.
Maryland has NO LAWS OR INSPECTORS TO GO INTO PUPPY MILLS!! THIS BUSINESS IS BIG PROFIT! Estimated to bring $2,000 per yr ---- per dog. Rather nice income for those with 2-300 breeding dogs, huh. Sure makes you wonder too why Government isn't stepping in to this. If nothing else opens a blind eyes---- Just look at the tax money they are losing !!

We should ban together to get the Pet Store in Twilley Shop. Ctr. To STOP the sale of the puppies. I've ask where they get them & they tell you a reputable breeder---Yeah, Right------Thanks "Pet Smart" for what you're doing. A reputable breeder is one you can see!! A repubtable breeder WANTS TO KNOW WHERE HIS PUPPIES ARE GOING----FOR SURE THEY DON'T SELL TO PET STORES!!

Not every dog breeder treats their animals poorly.
I don't breed dogs, heck, I don't even have one. They make me sneezy but, I have been to many places where the dogs are in great shape and very happy.
I am tired of people calling a place a "puppy mill" just because they breed dogs and make a profit.
Mistreating dogs is shameful but I don't care if you have 10,000 dogs being kept for breeding as long as they are taken care of.

My Wife and I do breed dogs and we're VERY careful as to how often, to whome we breed with and we never allow any mother to breed more than 3 times in her life time.
While many pet stores have come to us asking if we'd sell them our puppies, we have rejected them every time. We breed Yorkies and they offer $500.00 for out top quality champion dogs and sell them for $1,500.00 each. Maybe they tell people they have talked to us and imply they have the same quality, I don't know. However, they do NOT carry our pets, (so everyone knows) and WE choose who can and can't have one of our dogs. You must have the perfect environment, period. We don't just sell to someone walking through the door thinking they're so cute and so forth.
There are several Puppy Mills, one in Pocomoke, (in fact) and they're junk dogs with lots of medical problems. They do not allow you to look at their entire facility, that's the first thing you should look at. If their home is a mess, don't buy the dog. If the grounds aren't extremely clean, don't buy the dog. There are also mills in Delaware.
The best suggestion I could give you is, call the Salisbury Kennel Club and they'll tell you who is reputable and who isn't. If you're not looking for a pure breed, go to the Humane Society and choose an animal who needs a loving home. We just got 2 kittens from them and I have to tell you, they're absolutely adoreable!

That's exactly what I am saying. The author of this article paints with a pretty broad brush.
While there may be some places that have harsh contitions and minimal care for their animals, many more treat their animals well.
Just because there's not a big sign on the highway or a yellow pages ad does not mean it's a puppy mill.
If they chose to sell to a pet store (it's fine that you don't) that would not automatically make a breeder a puppy mill either.
It's all about the care ant treatment of the animals. It has nothing to do with selling them to a pet store.
anonymous 12:37, you, (respectfilly) continue to miss my point. Pet Stores are not willing to pay quality breeders for their pets. Quality breeders will NOT sell to just anyone and or allow their animals to be resold to just any condition/environment. At least the Humane Society QUALIFIES potential pet owners, unlike Pet Stores who only want to make big money.
You really need to watch the videos & read the articles on the web site that's given. Of course there are people who breed dogs that treat them well------This is not about them!!

There's a Puppy Shop across from the Dutch Country Market in Laurel, DE. They are brougt in from Puppy Mills from the South. A girl I know bought one from them, paying almost a $1,000. So far she's spent over $700 on the dog due to respitory problems. She told me it was dirty when she bought it & had to give it a bath. ------That should have been her 1st warning.
A reputable breeder will not just sell to ANYONE ! They care about where their animals are going!

A Puppy Mill is where dogs are used only as a commodity, bred repeadily, walk their entire lives in open wire cages, no proper vet care , low quality food, no human contact, some never see day light! I watched where the ASPCA raided one in the South, It was located back in the woods so no one could hear the crys of the dogs. One of the people hired to help reported them. There were over 300 dogs, filthy water, some had neither food or water. Matted from feces & urine which came down on them from the animals in the above crates . Some were blind, some had sores , all untreated!!! THIS IS A PUPPY MILL!!!!! This is not speaking of people who are reputable breeders.
i bought a German shepherd from super pets last year. I was given the name and address of the breeder and have spoken with her twice, and feel completely satisfied that my charlie is not from a puppy mill
As long as you know the Health Lines of the parents, see the surroundings from which the dogs come, & other advice given by Joe & whoever----then you can be comfortable with your purchase. When dogs are inbred---they pass on weaknesses to their sibblings. As a responsible owner----you want to make sure your dog is purchased from a place where you can see how the animals being raised, their parents, etc. To late, most people find hip displasia, intestional disorders , knee problems & other common problem traits are passed on in the dog to the unsuspecting purchaser. This--- causing the owners & the animal much heartache. It is our job to be responsible when we purchase----notjust by calling----Lord, they can give you anyone------GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!!! That's being responsible.
