I dont understand how you can kill a police officer, make his wife a widow and his child fatherless for life and get bail. Granted he could probably never come up with the cash, but that strikes me as a slap in the face to all law enforcement and their families. Is it a commissioner or a judge that sets bail in Delaware? They need to re-evaluate that.

Ok look this is the way I see it. I grew up with this kid, played baseball together even know his family. Do I stand by what he did? NO WAY! Fact is he has always been a punk, is this racism? First of all, let me say, I am so sorry for the family of the fallen police officer. I also must say, I am sorry for the family of Derrick. I have known the father of Derrick for many years. Actually his father has coached my son plus humdreds of other children over the years in Little League baseball, including his own son Derrick. His father has worked and supported his family and believe it or not, they both are American citizens! As well as the mother! You know we can not take back what we do in our lives and I am sure if we all look back over our own lives, we would find many things we would change or do diffently, just as I am sure Derrick over the rest of his life will do. I am without a dealt certain, that if Derrick could go back in time, he would change what happen that night. However,we as adults must pay for our mistakes, which I am certain he will do, because I have faith in the system! Our young children and young adults today face many obstacles we never had to face, with drugs, gangs and various other distractions while growing up! It is easy to sit here and judge and say he is a bad kid, his family is bad, but I can tell you things like this happen even in America because of the society we live in! I have 3 boys and I never raised my children to go out and kill or do drugs or steal, but unfortunately it happens! Even to the rich people, or the uppity up"s that think they are better than everyone else. So if you think this could never happen to your family, then I pray you never have to face it, because I am certain your life will be turned upside down and you will kick yourself and say 'where did I go wrong." As parents we try to do our best at raising our children, which is actually what Derricks family did! But guess what, society and the way of life caught up with him! Sorry we don't all live the life of the Cleavers and Beaver, but we try to do our best which is actually what the parents and family of Derrick did! In closing, I ask you not to judge and let the system do its part and let God be the true judge, because we are all going to be judged one day! You guys were complaining about the bail set...what you fail to realise is the bail that they set for $97,000 or whatever is for all the other charges they charged him with...there is no bail ammount for 1st degree murder meaning someone could show up to bail him out wit $300,000 and he isn't going anywhere so basically that $97,000 doesn't mean anything! the media just doesn't explain anything and it leads people the wrong way sometimes

I thought that I would take the time to write a little about all of the comments on this page and this story. I would first like to state that I am doing so completely without a "40 oz" in my hand, though I am a black man blutojthetotmom. You should really think about joining the KKK or something and I have news for you....with the grammatical errors you chose to ignorantly draft, it doesn't appear as though you have a Harvard education yourself. Second, I have known DP since he was a infant. I know his family very well. In fact, we are related by marriage. Though his act was reprehensible and blatantly wrong, we should not cast judgement on him. Anyone's life is a mistake away from being in the same predicament. To those that decided to rant obvious remarks filled with hatred about his "legal status" in this country, he was born and raised in Maryland and is not hispanic (as if that matters). If he were caucasian would you question his "alien status" or rant hatred toward Europeans? This is not about race or status. So, if you feel that it was "justifiable" to beat him, then you are no more just than the shooting itself. Some of the commentors on this article sound as if they have tied a few ropes to a few trees in their day. Let me clear something up for you. The people that are writing about DP are not in defense of him. They are simply commenting on the inaccurate conclusions that have been drawn about him. He was one of the most giving and loyal people I have ever known. He was not a "gangsta". He made a deplorable mistake that I'm sure he regrets to the core of his soul. If he would have killed another "hood rat" as you put it, you wouldn't have a care in the world, would you? Unfortunately, a person died. Unfortunately many undeserving people in the "hood" die at he hands of the police daily in this country. How many blogs have you written about that? None would be my guess. This is a tragedy. Noone can dispute this fact; however, there are many victims. Both families have suffered and though the officer's brother is understandably upset at the loss of his sibling, not finding it in his heart to forgive is not godly and will only continue to victimize you repeatedly. My prayers go out to this officers family as well as DP's. There are no winners in this story but unless you knew him, you cannot accurately comment on the content of his character. How would you fair if you were judged by the worst mistake you ever made? This was a 22 year old young man that got caught up in a lifestyle that most of us cannot understand. Again, I am not defending him and none of us were there as a witness. I have spoken to his family and they have been in contact with DP. The "vigalante style beating" that he suffered has been applauded by some of you. I wonder if you would feel the same way if it were one of your family members. I've even heard Obama being the blame! You are as ignorant as your comment. My mother always told me that if you cannot say anything intelligent, then stay silent. I suggest you take that advice. The fact is, even those of us that knew him cannot understand what took place in his decision-making process, that led him to pull that trigger. If you knew Cumberland, Md you would know that their truly aren't any "real hoods" there and there aren't murders there to even speak about (maybe 10 or so in history). He was not raised in an atmosphere that breeds this type of "cop killing mentality". His parents are good people. I know his sisters also. In fact, his sister is best friends with my wife. They have suffered as well. They have lost a son and a brother also. His grandmother has lost a grandson. He has several nieces and nephews and they have lost an uncle. The same as this officer's daughter has lost a father. I hope this shed some light on DP as a person/son/citizen and friend of many, many people in Western Maryland. My prayers are with you homie! I've read all of the comments. Let me first say that I'm from Cumberland, MD. I didn't know Derrick personally, but I do know the family. I think everyone could benefit from using a little empathy in this situation. Put yourself in each individual involved in the situation's shoes. If you're Derrick sitting in the car, why do you have a loaded handgun? Why do you pick it up, point it in the direction of another human being, and pull the trigger? Now, if you're the police officer, why do you ram the car? Why do you start to get out of your vehicle? Why do you not make it out of your vehicle alive? If you're the coworkers and colleagues of the fallen officer, why do you chase Derrick? Why do you tackle him to the ground? I could be wrong, but if I were in their shoes, I would have ensured that he was apprehended. If someone who just shot a coworker/colleague/friend of mine was running away, I don't think "hey, stop" would make him stop. The only way to get him would be to tackle him. I would then make sure that he no longer had any weapons. No doubt he resisted and tried to get away. I can't imagine that someone who is running for his freedom, gets tackled by numerous people and restrained while resisting is going to be without bruises and scratches afterward. I am NOT, for one second, saying it is socially acceptable for officers to beat a suspect once in custody. What I AM saying is that you reap what you sow. Simple cause and effect says that if he wouldn't have ran, he wouldn't have been tackled; if he wouldn't have picked up a gun and killed someone, he wouldn't have had to run; if he wouldn't have had a loaded gun in his possession, he couldn't have killed someone with it; if they wouldn't have been involved in illegal activities in the first place, their car wouldn't have been rammed. Please, now is the time for the parties responsible for wrongdoing to face the consequences; don't trivialize the death of an individual by making excuses for the person responsible.

Derrick Powell is worthless. He killed a police officer. He would have never amounted to anything in life. DP has been in DE B4 the shooting almost 3 years. He laid low like a mole living in the Flores household last I checked that's aiding and abedding. DP Luis and Chris made a concious decision to rob a drugdealer who was in the vehicle but didn't trust hs sorroundins so he ran when he realized it was a botched trap to get robbed by these three wannabee gangstas. They used a gray seebring tht belonged to Luis Flores and they all knew about the gun in tha car for they were all in accord,,, that gun belonged to Luis! Luis fat and overweight was sat in the back of hs own car for if it came time to run and drive or speed he wasn't quick. Look at the record all hve priors and some on public assistance gttn high all day while the workn class who hustle day in and day out the legal way and they rap glorifyin Money sex drugs and murder and u want me to feel sorry for these pieces of shit tht offr no contribution to ths world to make it a better place to live! To begin my heart goes out to the dead officer's family. NOW alot of these comments are hypocritical to say the least. You want law and justice but joke and commend the very officers who are supposed to provide that justice for beating up a man who has not been convicted of anything till this point. Police Officers abuse there powers all the time, where is the outrage about that!? This system creates people like Mr. Powell and it's sad on both sides. Well I have tio say this. Right now he is going through TRIAL, so no he was not CONVICTED, so all of you going on about cop killer this and cop killer that, really need to educate yourselves. WHen a person is a suspect in a case, they are charged with a crime that they are to fight in the court of law. The jury will decide his fate after review of testimony, evidence and reasonable doubt. I have been following this case for quite some time, and if you review some of the facts you'de realize that maybe just maybe, they have the wrong person. Flores was at the scene as well, but he was not found for several hours and at the time Powell was the only other one in the car other than teh driver that the police were able to find. They found Flroes DNA on the trigger, more gun residue on Flores than on Powell, and Flores was the first to react directly to Spicers aide after the shooting. Why dont you all read some of the facts and stop being so ignorant. Throwing the wrong person in jail for life, or giving them death will NEVER justify the tragic death of Chad Spicer.
