Highlights Of The Salisbury Festival

I don't think there was a single politician representing the Eastern Shore that missed the ribbon cutting ceremony for the kick off of the Salisbury Festival this past weekend.

Mayor Ireton received one hell of a reception and applause when they announced his name and clearly the citizens are pleased with their new choice for Mayor of Salisbury.

The crowd was much smaller this year than in years past but everyone knows how hard the Eastern Shore has been hit in this recession. That being said, the crowd all together wasn't too bad, considering we just had Pork in the Park a week earlier.

Hopefully the vendors were happy and it seemed everyone was having a good time all in all.

As a past chairman for the Festival, I want to congratulate all those volunteers that make this event successful and possible each year. Takes a lot of planning and time. Looks like they had great weather this year. I have many fond memories of past Festivals.

Was it worth $300,000.00? Did it bring anything of value to the city? Does the event outway the expense? Personally I DONT THINK SO.

Who is that guy gonna scare? Is he just barely 5 foot tall?

I have to agree with Doug on this one. With crime where it is, how can we not bat an eye at the overtime costs associated with putting over a dozen extra police officers out to handle a tiny section of the city for three days, not to mention all the OT for public works, Fire/EMS when we aren't putting officers out in neighborhoods where the crime is 362 other days of the year? Yes, it brings a lot of attention to downtown and I'm sure each vendor makes out real well, but at the city's and the taxpayers expense. Let's take care of crime and then worry about the rest.

Unfortunately, I too must agree with Doug. I understand the moral it creates. But I also understand the bucks it costs. Let's shelve it until the city gets on better footing then revive it again.

Totally agree. If there is money for overtime for officers, put them on the street to arrest the thugs.
