Salisbury Councilman (and mayoral candidate) Gary Comegys made an impassioned argument for inclusion of an $800,000+ fire boat in the city's capital improvement plan (CIP). To the casual watcher, it may have even been persuasive.

The real show stopper was the "CIP" item to put over $100,000 into the old "standpipe" tank that has been abandoned for years now.
The real absurdity is that Comegys wants the fireboat only if the City can get a grant from the feds. So is it needed or not, Bubba?

Seems right to me. He identified a need and found a way to pay for it without putting it on the back of the local economy.
I think it is good that the 2nd largest port in Maryland have a fire boat. Did it occur to anyone that the perceived lack of fire fighting ability and lack of commitment to the port may send port based businesses elsewhere?

The only waterway in Salisbury is down by Brew River. All accessable by roads. Its stupid to waist money on such a small area. I'm glad I don't pay Salisbury tax's.

Im confused. First of all...when has there ever been a fire near the city, on the water, where a fireboat would have been helpful? And second....can't port based businesses access help from land based "trucks"?

Are you for real???? Whether it comes out of the budget of the City, or comes from grant money, who do you think pays for this?
The local taxpayers! BUT, actually, if it comes from grant money, then ALL taxpayers in Maryland are not on the cuff for it.
You sure don't seem to know much about budgets and where money comes from, that is for sure.
As far as the need statement you also made, I do not live in Salisbury but I can tell you there are MANY other projects in Salisbury which are in far more need than a fire boat! The fire boat is a frill, not a need.

I'd really like to see the statistics on gross tons of product arriving and departing from the "second largest port in Maryland."
I suspect that, in comparison to the largest port in Maryland, Baltimore, the one that actually has oceangoing ships, Salisbury's gross tonnage is tiny. And how much actually leaves Salisbury via the waterway? I'm only aware of incoming shipments of grain (Perdue), gravel and petroleum products. What leaves Salisbury by barge? Anything?
Is this Homeland Security money from the Feds?
If so, this has nationally been some of the most poorly spent funding ever known.
I'd rather see us not take the money at all than take it to spend on something with such a questionable use as a fireboat.

Give me a break. 2nd largest port? What does that actually say about the size of Salisbury's port. Absolutely nothing. I could pee from one side to the other...why a fireboat? Can anyone tell me that? It is true that I have not read his justifications, but I'm dying to know.

The last major fire that we had adjacent to the river was when the Riverside Medical Park burned. It was right next to the river, but we didn't use the USS Sinksalot then either. The City of Salisbury does not need a fireboat in the range of $ 800,000. It is a waste of money. They don't utilize all the resources they have now. Get rid of the Mayor and Comegys and you will be doing something. Go Ireton and Caldwell!!!! The residents of Salisbury are looking for change, and leaving Comegys as Mayor is not change, other than male and female.

Actually, I just saw a barge full of concrete pilings leaving the harbor around 2:30 this afternoon. I live down Riverside and work downtown and on a regular basis notice activity.
And, grant money is great! Especially, when it is Fed grant money. With all that is about to be handed out by our new prez to create jobs..... our next MARE should seriously consider hiring a talented grant writer to make sure we get our fair share of federal dollars (ie everybody's pockets). When I worked in Charleston, SC in the planning department, that was one of their top priorities. Without incoming money, you can't fund major projects to improve the city and quality of life. That is what the end goal is, right?

If there is money to be spent, it needs to be spent on affordable housing. We need a fireboat like we need another hemroid in office.
The river is so poluted, it would take more than one fireboat to put the fire out! First boat to get to the fire and the 2nd one to put the 1st boat out when it became engulfed with the flames from the burning polution.
That $800,000 could certainly be put to better use by hiring more police officers and cleaning up the "seedy" parts of the city.
I say put 'ol Bubba out there on the river in a rubber dingy with a long range power blastin' water gun in his hand and let him patrol for fires.
Turnabout IS fair play, after all. He wants to send the taxpayers up the river on a song. Why not send Mr. Dingy up the river on a dingy?
Obviously the people do not see the need for a (new) fireboat, it appears that like so many other spending initiatives Comegys is following the Mare's directions. He has not shown any independent thought in many years. With this many comments against it, it would be good to say"there is an uproar" about the purchase of the "boat" lets table it. Makes pure sense.
When politicians like Gary want something they suddenly become deaf to the wants of the citizens.
