Microsoft founder turned philanthropist Bill Gates released a glass full of mosquitoes at an elite technology conference to make a point about the deadly disease malaria.
"Malaria is spread by mosquitoes," Gates said while opening a jar onstage at the Technology, Entertainment, Design Conference — a gathering known to attract technology kings, politicians, and Hollywood stars.
"I brought some. Here I'll let them roam around. There is no reason only poor people should be infected."

Oh for goodness sake, President Bush already has successfully combated malaria deaths in Africa, He started the Bush Malaria Initiative in June 2005, as well as the USPresidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, WITH HUGE RESULS. Bush is revered in Africa, and what did Obama do for Kenya? He campaigned for Odinga in 2006 on the UStaxpayer dime, Odinga los tthe election an dshowed his anger by killing thousands of Christians,no media will report on this though, if you google Bush Malaria Initiative you will be able to get the info that Bush DID do some decent things for the African poor, and gets ZERO credit. Now Bill Gates is trying to take raise public awareness for malaria when Bush has already addressed this with success? WHere was Bill Gates in 2005, Oh yeah, that was when he and Melinda did NO CHARITY WORK, they got called out on it and have now become the champions of the downtrodden.
Why didn't he just hold the meeting in Crisfield?
I think you missed the point Anon 9:46
DDT
Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane used responsibly would erradicate Malaria all over the world and NOT CAUSE HARM TO HUMANS OR THE ENVIRONMENT!!! Banned by the UN. Let's keep buying mosquito nets for $10 each and pretend to be doing the best we can.
Wow. You know the economy is bad when even Bill Gates has to go on the road to gig with a modern day "flea circus"....BTW; I have allowed the "Reese Bobby Brand"to be officially used in conjunction with the new "Couture" line of flea clothing {and flea paraphernalia} coming out this Spring in LA....{INEVITABLE DISCLAIMER: No actual fleas were harmed, or even deployed, in this desperate satire. Because they are unionized by the Marxist left wing, we would have had to pay them royalties "per flea head", which was deemed less than desirable due to self-serving production funding constraints}.
Did the elite run for cover?
What is the point, 11:38? Only rich liberals like Gates, Bono, etc. get press for trying to help the poor? That it is not politically correct to say anything positive about our former President? That Bill Gates could just have easily encouraged support for the Bush initiative (which uses the 10 dollar nets) instead of trying to make malaria his own little pet project so all of the media can drool over him? Seem likes you point is always the same--Bush bad, Obama good.
Thank you, thank you all for coming tonight; you are a lovely audience-it's great to be here in Secaucus {what?..where?..oh, I mean Salisbury}...Can we dim the house lights a bit, and provide a single spot for 1:43, who will now thrall us with their acumen regarding ANY BLOODY SPECIFIC THING George W. Bush ever did to "help the AMERICAN poor." And if he did such a good job with African mosquitos in 2005-why is it still such a flashpoint issue that Bill Gates would have pictures taken of himself on-stage looking like Phil Lesh conducting stupid pet trick auditions? A ten dollar mosquito net once millions of LIVE mosquitos are already airborne carriers of the disease is equivalent to the "drop and cover" of epidemic disease prevention. The stage is now yours, mate. Ignore the flying shoes at your own peril....BTW-if you haven't already Googled the YouTube footage of W. dancing with Assan Ronte and friends at this promotional gig...well, you don't know what you are missing!!
He should work with bugs, since his operating system is full of them...
A useful malaria vaccine is a rather difficult thing to make (I've tried and failed). Those little critters are tricksy.
and to 9:48, it's not just foreigners who are at risk of dying. How many American soldiers are you willing to sacrifice before you decide it's a good idea???
The first strains of DDT resistant insects appear about 4 years after intensive spraying started. So regardless of other issues, DDT is not the answer.
