Daily Times Overbilling Its Subscribers

"Hi Joe,
I haven't seen any information on this in your blog but I sometimes miss a day or two. I am a subscriber to the Daily Times (my husband doesn't want to get rid of it yet) and they automatically charge our credit card every month for the bill. In December and then again in January they have charged us twice for the subscription. After I called them in December they had said it was a software glitch and they would take care of it. They also stated that they had double charged all their customers that get auto billed onto their credit cards.

It happened again in January and when I called this time the lady acted like she didn't know anything about it happening the month before so I explained to her what the other cust rep had told me in Dec. She said she would take care of this for me but I just thought you should mention this so that others that perhaps don't check their monthly statements or have just overlooked it can make sure they get credited that money back.

Thank you for your time and thank you for all the information you provide.

Teresa"

Ahhh, sort of like rebstes on purchased goods. Most people don't get around to sending in the certificate, the original UPC from the box and the original receipt, and the buyer ends up paying full price for the item. And sort of like the debit card scam that banks have, holding $150 in "escrow" for your $5 purchase for 30 days.
How many DT subscribers will notice, and will the DT "fix" the glitch to return the overpayments whether or not subscribers report the overpayment?
Your guess is as good as mine, but if the DT's financial integrity follows its journalistic example, most likely not.
To be totally responsible, they should print a front page notice to all subscribers. Yeah, like that's going to happen...
Good luck to everyone who looks like they're about to get taken by the DT.

sorry, that's rebates, not rsbstes.

Teresa, you shouldn't let them automatically charge this every month. You should get that undone quickly. You'll probably have to demand that it be done. If they want your business let them send you something in the mail to renew your subscription. Only pay every 3 or 6 months cause it won't be long before there's no Daily Times anyway.

TaDa!!!

More people are finally waking up to the money handling of the DT's.

They have overbilled customers in one way or another for YEARS!

Back several years ago when I was a subscriber, I had a yearly contract.
When it came "close to" the end of the contract, they changed the dates and grabbed me for 2 weeks.
When I called to complain, they put the renewal date back where it was supposed to be but the next year, they did it again.
That is when I told them to stuff their paper where the sun doesn't shine.

There is so much wrong with the DT's. It's not just one area of the business and if they had gotten rid of some key people over there, maybe they would have a paper which was surviving.

Oh well, too late now and they STILL have those same people there who helped run them into the ground. Really resembles all the banks and others getting bailouts doesn't it?

Is this the corporate future in our country? Let people run your company into the ground but keep them on payroll anyway?
Must be nice!

I was a subscriber for 20 years. paid once a year in advance and was suppose to get one extra week free for the year in advance. they stopped the free week and then I noticed I was renewing in Jan instead of late Feb . looks like I had been loosing a week past couple of years. I called and they told me it was a computer glitch and they did give me a free week. I have been one year with no DT and I am alive & well.

I too am DT free, funny enough the only thing I miss is the jumble puzzle. Why pay for late news anyway, Joe makes sure we know what happens before DT even had time to wipe the sleep from their eyes.

I, for the third time, tried unsuccessfully to get a Daily Times subscription delivered. And, for the third time I did not receive ANY newspapers. I finally called and canceled last week but I will NEVER buy the Daily Times again and have even boycotted their website. When I called to cancel... they didn't even apologize. Horrible customer service from a biased paper... not priceless!!! lol

When we moved recently, they kept calling and calling trying to get us to subscribe. I finally told them I read Salisbury News and don't need them.

If you see "Sun Marketing" on your caller ID with a 602 area code,it is some company Gannett has hired to call and get you to subscribe and they are a pain in the butt. They call my house at least 3-4 times a week asking me to subscribe to the Daily Times and we keep telling them no and they still call.Nice.

thats interesting. Had same problem called they could not see that I was charged twice so I was told to send a copy of bill to local fax. I also stopped auto payment. Never heard back. Called back still no response so I quit the paper. That was the 2nd week of January. I still have not missed a day of the paper. I am glad you were told it was a glitch. I wonder when my free fire starter is going to stop.

I sent in a check for a 2 month subscription last July (to pay for Aug and Sept) when a rep came to my house. And you guessed it!!! It didnt start Aug 1. With a week of daily arguing, it finally started coming on a daily basis. What I didnt realize is that when I talked to "Ketika", she found my old records and started charging my credit card. Im not sure what happened to the check. And after the 2 months, the charge continued to be charged to my credit card. First of all, I sent in a check for a reason!!! Secondly, this was an UNAUTHORIZED charge to my account. I have contacted my credit card and given them "KETIKA's" name.
