In light of current budgetary hardships, the men and women of the Ocean City Fraternal Order of Police are proud to announce a series of voluntary concessions of salary items mandated by the 2009-2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
In recent days, the Mayor and City Council noted their intent to withhold various salary provisions for city workers as a necessary component for drafting a balanced budget for the upcoming year.
In a show of support for the General Employee’s and to demonstrate our continuing
cooperation with the Mayor and City Council, our members voted to forgo scheduled
Cost of Living Adjustments, Merit Increases, and Shift Differential pays for the 2009-2010 budget year. These concessions amount to a sizeable savings against current
payroll and will minimize increased costs associated with employee benefits.
We’ve demonstrated our commitment to the Ocean City community for 40 years and
pride ourselves on making Ocean City a safe, family oriented destination. The citizen’s of Ocean City have been most gracious to our organization and our members through the years and we are pleased in this time of economic turmoil that we are able to ease the financial burden associated with the budget process with an in kind favor.

This is a poorly written statement. Improper use of the apostrophe and that last sentence of the third paragraph makes it sound like the FOP is either pleased that there is economic turmoil, or they were pleased to extort favors due to the financial mess that extracts a heavy toll on all of us.
5:15 Are you really that damn critical? Not withstanding the apostrophies, what's your feelings on the fact the police officers in Ocean City have voted to forgo any raises this coming fiscal year? I personally think it was a stroke of PR brilliance considering the possible alternative is layoffs. This release shows the citizens of Ocean City the FOP is proactive and concerned about them, not simply reactive.
As a general employee I would like to thank the FOP for making this concession. We learned late last night from the City Manager that the general employees would be under a salary freeze for FY10. This is a bold step by the FOP who were entitled to raises by the collective bargaining agreement. Hopefully concessions like this will allow the Town of Ocean City to avoid layoffs and furloughs.
Lay 'em off. Way too many police officers and "administrative" types. Too many careerists. While you are at it, lay off 20-30% of the total Ocean City Town workforce.
Who are they kidding?
The local peasants paying the property taxes are hurting. Big time.
Get real, Ocean City Council.
I think this was a great way to show that not all COPS are stuck up and are really out to help others. I had to read the damn letter 3 times to make sure i was truely reading what i was reading. I cant believe they would give up their entitled money, but my hat goes off to them. Absolutly great thing to do. I hope that the city financial advisors remember this when the city turns around and these guys ask for a raise.

Hey Wicomico County Council, see how collective bargaining can work, see what can happen when people are aloud to come together and function for the best of all. A vast majoity of the citizens voted for Wicomico Sheriff's Office to have collective bargaining and you still have yet to give it to them. Can't wait until next election.
This was a very smart move, the FOP sold everyone a bill of goods years ago they knew if they did not do this, they would be gone. Ocean City keep your union, no thanks, we have enough problems in Salisbury now.

as a general employee of the town i applaud the police for doing this. we all in the town work for the same public reguardless of who writes the checks...
It would be nice to see the Delmar PD follow suit but I won't hold my breath.
It's truly funny how those who couldn't last through the first day of the police academy, are the biggest critics, but also the first to 911 when they need help. Go on a ride along with OCPD on Labor day weekend to see what being a cop is really like. Then maybe next time you'll think before putting your foot in your mouth.

I think we all need to look at who has been there for the last four terms and have yet to give the public safety peace of mind. Shameful. Joe you busted the mayor's bubble time to take a hard look at county politics. Grand dad throw your name in the hat. Three more people with integrity and courage needed in other districts. PS: stop asking the management of SPD why people are leaving, ask the people that left why they left. If they put the real reason on the resignation letter it still can come back and haunt them because of who knows who. So, please city council, press, joe, please do a study, a research paper, a story on why people leave SPD.

Please don't hold your breath. You would suffer more brain damage. In Ocean City, they provide an attractive SALARY & wonderful health benefit package for the Police. They give their Police raises & cost of living allowances. So why wouldn't you work with Your city.
DELMAR Too Late now, & lets be clear about this; the poor economy will be the new execuse to keep things the way they are for years to come.

As a past officer with OCPD, it makes me proud to learn of this decision. The officers make a good salary, have a good pension and benefits and should give back a little. Right on you guys. Stay safe out there
