Companies can sell that oil to the highest bidder, USA or not, so i think offshore drilling will only help China, they are going to need the most oil in the next 50 years. The sooner we get off it, the better.
NO! Don't drill ANYWHERE! Burning fossil fuel is cooking the planet! We need wind and solar power. Photo-voltaic collectors on every house! Unfortunately, that won't happen for one reason only, the oil companies run our government.
i think by the time were to implement this itll already be to late for alot of americans. does anyone honestly believe that the american middle class is going to survive for another ten years. i never dreamed it would happen this fast.
Of course it's the right answer! Is it the only answer? Not by a long shot.
Drilling is but one of many items that are needed. Other answers are also needed, such as solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, etc.
And of course, other aspects such as those who engage in futures speculation should be willing and able to accept delivery of what they buy, or else be disqualified from purchasing them, as well as have the funding in place to complete the transactions. Things along those lines.
For those who do not want to drill, please think about your view. I would agree it is not the long term answer. By long term I mean starting 30 or forty years out. We do not have the tech to do without oil in the next several decades. It will come, but over a long time. We have to make it to that point without wrecking the world economy and reading by candles. Sounds nostalgic, but it ain't. We need everything to kick in, nuclear and renwables included. For national security and self reliance, we better start being more self sufficient or we will be at the mercy of the Hugo Chavez's of the world !
No. Unless they (Oil Companies) start shipping the current oil supplies being taken out of Alaska, off our coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico to the US of A and NOT Japan or anywhere else. If the oil companies were required to ship all supplies of oil taken from leased federal land there would be no need to drill in Anwar or offshore. Let's get real.
I beg to differ, we do have the technology the same as we have had for cars. We just don't utilize it because it is not in the interest of government or corporate america to put this technology into place. Don't make it sound like we are a backward 3rd world country, we are a world leader. Believe that propaganda bull crap if you like. I'll sell you a bridge over Arizona if you're that gullible.
Whatever it takes to build our economy here and lessen our dependance on other countries, I'm for it. In my opinion, the best long term answer is to find alternative sources for energy (domestically, of course), but in the meantime, we need oil. Lets keep our money in American hands and help American workers put food on their tables. Our economy is desperate for a boost, and I think this could be it.
A commercial for this just came on the TV right now for this very topic. Did you know we're spending $700 billion a year in other countries for oil? We imported 24% of our oil in 1970, 42% in 1990, and today its 70%.
I watch that show "Ice Road Truckers" and most of what they haul is for gas and oil drill operations around the Arctic Ocean. The narrarater(sp?) said that it is believed that ONE-THIRD of the planets untapped oil supply is in the Arctic. We have to do something.
Problem is the world is using about 2.5 million barrels per day more than we are pumping. So while we have started conserving in the US, China just keeps sucking it up so the actual demand is not going down. That first 2.5 million barrels out of the ground everyday will get sold straight to China. Once we catch up, people will want to use more if it becomes any cheaper, thus feeding the cycle. Like a dog chasing his tail. We won't ever truly get ahead.
Bush is still trying to push for it though...ever thought of the oil interests his family owns? At least he will benefit. And there is still nothing that says oil companines have to sell oil drilled in America to Americans. Lets just take Iraq's oil aready. Isnt that the real reason we went there in the first place? What are we waiting for?
Nobody wants to deal with the truth about our country, and the truth is we are Imperialists. We went to Iraq to take there oil and we're not taking it. We are trying to pretend we are a Democracy, and we are allowing our liberties to be flushed down the drain everyday. Of course we should drill, of course we should build more refineries, of course we should have wind power, and solar power. But Anon 9:21 and 10:28 are right we do have the technology, but not drilling is a smokescreen for much more bullshit that they are playing. Have you ever seen the hoodlums on the street playing a shell game? Same game...bigger issues, different hoodlums!
It's that simple. Work on alternative methods until our oil gets online. (Wouldn't it be GREAT is the rest of the world depended on us for their oil? Wonder at the same time, would we screw them?
Like cattle to slaughter. The oil companies are not for the interest on the US. They are for the interest of Wall Street. You are being led to believe lies. Sure big oil wants expanded drilling leases. Then they want to sell the oil to the highest bidder...China maybe. Think about it, don't be fooled.
It will help the USA if the company running the business sells the oil and power back to interests in the USA. It will not help if another country gives the company a better price than we are willing to pay in this country, and the oil/energy gets sold elsewhere.
There is a war on the middle class. This means the desire is to have a wealthy people and the rest not so well off so that the wealthy can employ the not so well off for little to no money. In case one doesn't quite understand, this means the majority of people will be working for a small class of very wealthy people.

ABSOLUTELY!We should also start construction on new refineries, nuclear power plants, along with energy sources such as wind and solar.

No drilling anything, anywhere. The wind and sun is free, use it.

There are plenty of off good shore leases that are sitting idle. They ALREADY have permission to pump from them.
This topic is a political smokescreen.
It's also OK to leave some oil in the ground for future generations. That would not be a crime against society (as some people pretend).

YES! If other countries are drilling off our coast then we should be too. This nation needs to independant again!
9:16 nailed it.
