Question of the Day, Fri 7/11

(Not so much lately, thankfully) there have been headlines regarding day care centers. Charges including physical abuse, abandonment, sex abuse, neglect, accidental overdoses, even death.

The summer is here. Kids are out of school.

Do your kids attend a day care center or summer camp? Where? Are you happy with the arrangements? With the poor economy, is it a struggle to afford daycare?

Are you fortunate enough to stay home with them or have a trusted family member babysit?

Have you ever had to pull your child from a day care facility because there was evidence of neglect or abuse? If it was your child, were you able to bring your child some justice?

I'm very fortunate that my Dad lives with me and he is disabled, but his disability doesn't hinder him from being able to watch the kids. So I have a built in babysitter at home. However, my oldest Son has been to Soccer Camp this week and will go to VBS next week. I didn't worry about him one bit this week. He was attending Upward Soccer Camp at the Seaside Christian Academy. He loves the Upward program and I trust everyone there.

My husband and I made the decision that I would stay home with our kids after about 6 months of horror trying to find a decent day care provider.

In all of the parenting books I was reading, I couldn't bring myself to allow someone else who's values may or may not be my own, raise my children.

I home schooled the two oldest for 6 years and it was the most wonderful time of our lives.
My daughter went on to go to high school when she turned 13 and graduated at 16 and has now completed 4 years of college and is two classes short of her degree.
My son went on to take his GED and scored higher than any other child in the state that year.
He has about three year of college but isn't sure what he wants to do yet and is working as a sound man at Secrets.
We went without a lot of things by only having one income. But it was things we went without, not experiences and wonderful times shared.
So what if we didn't have a new car every couple of years we had each other and I have three of the most self assured self reliant kids I know.

Once when my child was around 2 years old I went to her day care center (approximately 75 kids cared for daily here) to pick her up at the end of the day. I was told that one of the other two year olds had broken out with chicken pox, and they were exposing all the other kids in that group to them, so "they could all get the chicken pox over with".
She did, in fact, get the chicken pox, and when ready to return to day care, we took her somewhere else.

In the summer I have a girl on summer vacation from school babysit at my house-at $5 an hour it gets expensive but she is like a member of the family and our daughter loves her.During the school yr my daughter will be going to daycare after school.I only work 20 hrs a week but with the economy tanking and hubby already working 60+ hrs,I need to pitch in!At least I did get to stay home with my daughter until now and she is 4.And luckily the daycare provider she will be going to is a family friend.
